This is very sad news for me. Now I have to switch.
Do you or anyone you know how to find a HEI unit for the 2.8 Chevy V6 60?
The next is are the HEI unitsa for 2.8/3.1/3.4 all the same?

      a rock and hard place

For us using Dex-Cool (I have 140,000 miles on my cooling system) I am leary to switch as the new green stuff will likely cause a breakup of deposits that may be hiding leaks. sigh
Anyone have any issues with dex-cool use, meaning, anyone notice they have to "top off" once in a while?

      Thanks Bszopi for the notification.

FWIW it's just a class action suit, and it hasn't been proven as far as I know. If anything, people are probably leaving the dexcool in too long (maybe even the interval GM CLAIMS is good for the coolant is too long) and that causes the problems, more than just the nature of the coolant.

Speaking of dex cool buildups... what's the best way to get rid of that?

i noticed when i had my 3400 apart that it had alot of dex slime and cristalDex in the passages.. i scraped out and flushed what i could, but i'm sure there is more in there... I'm planning on running pure water in the engine for the first day or so.. hopefully that'll help.

I use Calgon water softener and water. After a couple shallow/quick around town warm up/cool downs it does really really well with dissolving deposits. I drain it by letting the motor warm the mixture just to where its warm on the radiator fins, then I pop the drain cock open.

I use about 10oz to treat my system. Great flush!

if your having to "top off" every once in a while check you may have a coolant seep. 3100/3400 have a head seep you can see this most noticably on the front cylinder head on the throttle body side. it will look like a dirt build up along the side of the head. i see it all the time working for gm. its not a big issue if its just seeping. keep an eye on it. it has been know it get real bad after a while.

Good to know. I am running the 3500, would you include this motor too?? (I know its basicly the same motor as the 3100/3400...but still)

not that i have seen or heard yet. but that does not mean it won't happen. I think gm got smart a started using there"replacement gaskets" on the newer engines. you will know it if the seal material is green instead of orangish-red. there also using this "new material on replacement intake gaskets on the V8's fyi.

ok i get it DEXCOOL = Bad but what are the other alternatives? what types of coolant? also what is the best type of flush, the liquid prestone stuff? and should i just take my bottom radiator hose off and let it drain into a catch pan and keep filling it on the reservoir. just use distilled water for the flush and then replace with at least 50/50 of whatever coolant and distilled?
