    3.4 Timing/etc

    Sappyse-

Nice job on the photos and descriptions for 3.4L DOHC timing. Right now, I have removed both heads and pulled the oil pump driver [leaking] on my 94 cutlass with DOHC 3.4L. What do you recommend with regard to where to get replacment gaskets, timing belts, etc. I need to replace the oring on the oil pump driver and was thinking about replacing the valve seals while torn down. What's your advice. I want to keep the car and it has about 150k miles. thanks,

Where? Any parts store. Get the felpro set. It has the top end gaskets and valve seals. Not cheap but if you have the heads off then you will need all of these gaskets anyway. I use rockauto.com for the timing belt parts.

here's a tricky one for ya then, why would the timing belt have a tendancy to "walk" forward, slightly over the lips on the idlers, and proceed to shred itself...?
This is the 3rd time i'm tearing this down to redo it.... Perhaps some 'trouble shooting a botched fix' section at the bottom of this article would be handy....

Got it - thanks. I would have gone to the stealer [I mean dealer] first. Now I will check with local parts house and go with aftermarket. Does that Felpro top gasket kit have the oil pump drive o-ring? Do you recommend changing the timing to 11 or 13 degrees or not. My 3.4L is bone stock, but runs very strong. I don't have the cam hold down tools. It looks easy enough to make one. I agree this is not the car for grandmother...

Did you change the idlers also? Obviously some misalignment somewhere.
If you are driving a Chevy, everything else, is just a blur. 3.4 Carbon Footprint.

Tensioner pulley/bracket is usually the cause of that. That plate that bolts to the read head has a tendency to break. I just remembered that I was gonna see if I could have some made up that are stronger:P.

WIth an automatic, I would do the 6/6 timing. Timing tools are yet another thing I need to have made up since kohburn isn't giving me his cad file or pricing to have more made.
