I finally am making a pro-active effort to announce an upcoming site downtime several days before it actually happens!! Woohoo for me! And now on to the actual announcement...
Anyone who has visited the site in the past week or so has noticed that the main page and content is basically not there (it is, but not readily accessible). It seems that we were causing excessive loading on the server processors (hence the shutdown on that Friday). So, for the past week I have been looking at ways to try to improve the site to make it less server intensive. I've actually installed and started to configure 3 new content management systems, none of which I was overly impressed with. So, I started looking at other options. And the option that we will be going with is to move hosts and go to a VPS (virtual private server). This isn't as big and bad as a truly dedicated server, but it is a huge jump from what we currently have.
So what does that mean for you, the users? It means the site will be down for a day or 2 while the server transfer takes place. But, the good news is, the site should be faster once its back up and running. And all of the content will be back up as well (maybe not right away, but soon). I have also talked with the new host about assisting me in streamlining the current applications we are running for the forum and CMS, which should hopefully help with the site speed as well.
This move will affect ALL site currently run on this server by me, of which most are basically unknown. BUT, WOT-Tech will be affected, as will 3400swap.com. I will be working with Ben to hopefully minimized the downtime for WOT-Tech, so as not to hamper any sales or technical support needed by his customers. I haven't decided on an actual date yet, but I hope to do it the end of the week, weekend, or first of next week. I will keep this thread updated as things get closer to being worked out.
Thanks!
