  • Thread Tagging

Ok, so I've changed around the homepage some. One of the biggest changes is a new option in vBulletin, which is a "Tag Cloud". Basically, what this is, is a block of search phrases that are based off the tags that people add to threads. The more often the tag appears, the larger the text is inside the cloud. When you click on one of the items inside the cloud, all of the threads with that tag show up. Kind of like a simplified keyword search.

Unfortunately, the only way it become effective is if people actually start "tagging" threads. The nice thing is that anyone (and everyone!) can do it. At the end of the thread, there is a box labelled TAGS. At the far right of the box, click on the EDIT TAGS link to bring up a text field for entering tags. Insert words that you feel are keywords for that specific thread, or add to the existing list if you feel something is missing. This will make common topics (hybrid swaps, dist o-ring leaks, dexcool, etc) easy to find for people when they are looking.

    Happy tagging!!

Nice... Anyway, I've added a new feature that will automatically create tags for a new thread if the author doesn't enter any tags. The validity of these tags depends on if the topic of the thread is valid. But, its better than nothing, as it seems the majority of threads that are created explain themselves well in the thread title. I can always edit/remove tags that don't work well.

I have started adding tags to threads as I read them, so hopefully this will help build our tag library. I really don't want to be the only person doing it though!

Sorry Brad, I was up late as you can see by the time stamp (~2:30am my time) when I made that post, and I got a kick out of it at that point in time, of course. :P I saw the tag cloud the other day and wondered what it was/for. This sounds like yet another good idea for the site

great, well "what's" was a tag in a thread so I removed those tags. If tags are going to be used for every thread, its about as useful as a normal search. I think they should only be used on important, informational threads so that we can use the tags to find info. Not 3800s, 350Z, what's, or other nonsense.

Yeah, I've been noticing that as well, and deleting or/and editting tags to more closely match the thread. I'll go ahead and remove the auto-create feature.
