How to replace the alternator

Special Tools Needed:

Tie rod separator, Good hydraulic jack, set of metric sockets that has 15mm, 16mm, 18mm

Intro

Before you start find a day when you have about four to five hours to kill.
Some things you may want to replace while here. You may have to get these prior to starting.
1. Oxygen sensor. It's cheap and easy to get to while here.
2. Donut gasket in the head pipe in the exhaust. Order it before you get under the car. Mine had a small leak. The bolts had soot all over them.

Instructions

1. Disconnect the battery. I usually just remove the air filter box. Two bolts on each side of the box, one screw around the air intake hose and remove the AIT plug connection. Then pull it out.
2. Remove the antifreeze overflow bottle. one screw and one speed nut then remove the overflow hose and pull straight up.
3. Remove accessory drive belt.
4. Remove the nut that holds the power steering hose clamp to the top alternator bolt. one nut.
5. Jack up the car real high and remove both front tires.
6. Passengers side of the car at the wheel well remove the rubber dust cover from the firewall and from around the drive axle.
7. Remove the Passengers side tie rod end from spindle.
8. Loosen the front engine cradle bolts. Place a jack under the rear of the engine cradle and remove rear engine cradle bolts.
9. Lower the cradle about an inch or two then go to drivers side and remove the bolt in the steering knuckle.
10. Lower the engine cradle the rest of the way until the top dog bone holds up the cradle.
11. At this point crawl under the car and get under the back of the oil pan.
12. Remove the lower alternator bolt, 13mm, and the upper alternator bolt, 10mm, from the passeenger's side of the the car.
13. There is a piece of black ductwork at the bottom of the pan. To remove it there is a snap clamp up in the dark hole where the alternator is. It is hard to get loose. Then pull the duct out.
14. When you get it off you can get the rest of the alternator bolts out and it will drop down.
15. Remove the cables from the back of the alternator and go to the Passengers side of the car.
16. There should be just enough room for the alternator to come out. You may have to turn it, roll it and possibly even remove the clamps from the AIR pump lines to get some more room but it will come out.
17. While under if you decide, pull two bolts to the head pipe and let it drop
18. Get a wrench that will fit the O2 sensor and remove it and install the new.
19. Replace the gasket to the head pipe and bolt it back on. This is difficult and you may need to raise the cradle up some to get the bolts in.
20. To get it back try to reverse this. one note don't forget the steering knuckle when you raise the cradle back up.
