  • Throttle body coolant bypass

I was wondering does eliminating the tb coolant line actually improve hp at all.. And my other quest. is what do you use to cap both ends with?????

  • #2
not really a hp increase, there is an article about this in the myths section.
but if you live in the south ,like i do (La.) ther is no need for the coolant to be going throught the t.b. .
i did it before i ever found this site and it was more a mind game than anything. of course that is in my opinion..

What engine? You just route a hose between the 2 TB connections to keep it flowing through there, just not through the throttle body.

Even though it doesn't add HP, it looks pretty cool on your list of mods.

You'd unhook the lines, put a piece of metal pipe inbetween the two rubber lines and clamp them back down. Coolant flows as normal, but not through the TB.

It will help prevent heatsoak of the TB.

I did this so that I can remove my TB whenever I need to by only taking 2 bolts loose. Those damn lines a 3.1L are impossible to get off, the factory hose clamps are always on backwards (so you can't get to the tabs to take them off).

I am new to the board, I owned a Lumina a few years ago and am on the look out for a good Z34 (91 - 92 ish style).

I have done the coolant bypass to every car I have owned for the last 5 years or so. The way I would describe the gains are like this..........

You know when you get in the car in the morning after it has been sitting all night? You start it up wait a few seconds then drive away. The car seems to have a bit more pep to it for the first couple minutes. Then it goes away. You figure the pep lost is just you getting used to the car again. Well I would submit that the TB getting to temps from the coolant runnign through is heating the intake charge that little bit enough that its taking that zip away.

In my experience After doing a bypass it seems to keep that pep for longer. If you live in a hot environment then you may lose the pep anyway, but up in Canada where I live it doenst get that hot most days.

I go on the premise that it doesnt hurt the car in any way to do it, its free (most the time) or next to nothing to perform. ANd can be done the next time you are under the hood (every weekend for me) so why not do it??!! If you gain something great! If you dont then like it has been said already "it looks cool in your list of mods".

But put me down for 1 vote for it working a bit.

My car looses pep after it driving it a little too. And stock I don't have the coolant lines on the TB. It's just the whole motor heating up. Plus I think depending on the computer/year (maybe all) but it doesn't do any KR until at operating temps, so if you have ping, it won't pull timing until the motor is at temp.

Don't expect any big difference, but its one of the little things that adds up and every bit you can do to keep the intake and air cooler, the better.

It's there to prevent ice forming on the TB and sticking it open. But I've never had that problem in winter. Maybe if you hose your engien down in winter it might be a problem... lol.

forgot to add.... I never removed it off my cars in the last 3 years. I ran them all winter in minus 35 degree C temps with no idling, or driveability problems.

I cannot understand why rerouting the LIM heat crossover would not be beneficial. All the V8 guys do it religiously. They pour block filler into passages to prevent coolant flow. I don't care what anyone says. I'm going to do it. It's 110+ here sometimes. When my car sits through the drive-thru I hit and gas and almost nothing happens! Complete heat soak to the tune of about 50 horsepower!

V8 guys use block filler to strengthen the block, has nothing to do with coolant flow.
