i was thinking of having a set of forged pistons coated on the skirts and on the tops for my 3400. a friend of mine told me that coating the piston tops can have an adverse effect on properly heating of the piston. opinions?

There are many that you can do at home now, but you need a bead blaster. You spray it on, bake it for x hours, then bead blast the black residue off to leave a clear finish.
I've seen BMW guys do it, I'll find the link...
