  • 3.4 to 3400 swap

has anyone here tries to swap a 3400, maybe one of the newer supercharged models, into a 94-97 3.4 V6 firebird?...i have 2 of them and want to modify one without going the old ls-1 route

there never was a 60*v6 with a superchanger from factory. you are thinking of the 3800 supercharged. you could go that route, i think for the most part you could bolt the motor right in as the 95+ camaro came with a 3800 series 2 non supercharged. the biggest issue i see is that the throttle body is on the back of the blower, and that points right into the firewall. a ford supercoupe throttle body setup may fork for you in this case. the other issue would be engine managment, im not sure what way to go with that, but id guess stand alone would be the easyest.

the other option would be a 3400/3.4l hybrid motor. you would use your 3.4l block and crank (rwd block has different motor mount bosses than a fwd), 3400 pistons (they are dished, 3.4l are not, or not dished enough), 3400 heads and intake. the plenum is symetrical, so just flip it around so the tb is at the front. you could use the 3.4l timing cover and water pump, aswell as all the stock accessories. as for computer, you may need a bit of tuning, but it should be pretty much plug and play other than likley having to add some length to some wires.

      oops

you are right i was thiking of the 3800sc.....i have 2 of these V6 birds and want to do something fun with one of them. how much of a power gain do you think the hybrid you described would add....the stock 160 hp is ok, i used to drive an anemic 110 hp ford probe....i'd like to get as close to 200 as i can. maybe just a swap for a 3800 from a later model might do the trick

the 3800 is around 200hp, but they are very heavy and arent the best motor. with the hybrid, depending on what else you do to it, 200hp shouldnt be that hard to achive. a good cam and some porting, mabey build some headers.

i dont really wanna sound like some hillbilly here but if ur already pulling the motor to build it up and it is an f-body car, please put a SBC in it..(IT FITS IN) lol, you will get twice the power... I hate V8 tractor engines too, but its like biulding up a 2.3L 4cyl for a mustang.. Pointless!!! because there is a guy who spent alot less on his v8 that will still beet you,

                        u cant put a 3800 SC'd into a f-body - doesnt work all around.

tiago was using the stock ECM on his car. just an FMU to handle fuel.

u should talk to him - he posts on LS1tech.com (he has a few LS1's now...got rid of the 3.4 a while back)

ummm...can too....a centifugal supercharger will work just fine....also a cowl induction hood and slight modification to the cowl plus custom motor mounts will give you the clearance....just need the wiring harness and ecm...a lot of work and money but it can be done...i have already consulted mechanics with over forty years of experience...it can be done...but not by me....a procharger or a turbo will do me just fine
