  • 3100 cam sensor questions

How does the 3100 cam sensor work? What is its relationship to TDC #1?

I'm looking into using a Turbo Buick ECM ( 7148 ) to run a 3100 with sequential injection and a turbo in my '90 Pontiac 6000 AWD. I need to verify that the 3100 cam sensor is something that the 7148 can work with.

Here is a picture of a 94 cam. Notice the cam pin location and the notch location in the trigger:

Now, compare the location of the cam locator pin in relation to the crankshaft key:

And finally, here is a picture of the crank trigger which shows the location of TDC in relation to the crank key.

As far as the operation, I know there is a post on here that describes it, cause I've explained it before. I thought I had something in the articles about it, but I guess not.

      Thanks for the info.

Ok... the trigger wheel is immediately behind the front cam bearing (took me a little bit to see what you were talking about).

Where's the sensor located? Immediately above the cam?

The drawings don't give me useful information due to the inaccuracies of visually estimating.

I needed to know the nature of the cam sensor pulse train. That appears to be one pulse per cam revolution. I'm not good enough with hall effect sensors to know the polarity of the signal from the trigger wheel. What polarity is it?

The next thing I need to know is the relationship of the cam sensor pulse to TDC #1.

      Thanks.

This manual should give you everything you need to know about the trigger. I still can't find the other scans from this book, but I knew the whole thing was online.

And yes, the cam sensor is directly above the cam.
