  • lifters??

k yall, I need some input on this.. So ive been having little bit of trouble with my lifters ticking, all the rockers lash good, but there is still some ticking coming from them even at 1/2 turn lash, so i desided to take the intake off juss to make sure somthing stupid didnt happen like a screwd cam lobe. everything seemd to be ok.. but i do have a diffrence in lifters presure they keep, some bleed down and some dont, there is 4-5 that you can push on and they depress a bit, then the rest are rock hard,?? witch way should thay be, like i would wanna think they should all be squishy when its not running,.... Btw they were all new with my rebuild a little wile ago its a 2.8L block with 2.8L lifters, biger cam and then 3.1L heads

I believe they are better off being solid. The lifters I get for the DOHC are all solid new. However I am not really even sure if that is a good measure of their performance because I have had no noise with a mixed batch like you have now. I have had more noise after a rebuild on my old 3.1, due to who knows what. Could be injectors are louder, as mine were. I am sure I had lifter or piston noises as well.

yeah, i've experience that...some hard some give. nothing's perfect. besides, they were designed to pump up with the engine running, not hold oil with the engine off. i wouldn't worry about it if the lash is ok.

I've run into the same thing and it really worried me too. Was hard to tell if I was setting the lash properly, especially since I was going from the stock pedastal rockers to adjustable rockers. First time I installed them everything seemed to run fine though and they were only a little louder than with the stock rockers. After I added the cam though they are much louder now (you can really hear the knocking) and I'm back to worrying if I didn't set them right or the noise is just an effect of the extra lift.

If oil bleeds out and it becomes squishy it is not an issue. This will vary depending on where the cam stopped. But I will tell you right now 1/2 turn lash is not nearly enough with stock studs. They need at LEAST one turn. They are a much finer thread than any 3/8" SAE stud youd find in the after market. And most instruction manuals cater to this type of stud.

thats weird kuss i lashed them 1/8 turn and it seems to run a little better, but im paranoid that the valves are staying parshialy open, kuss of the way it started to run goofy after it revved kinda high, verry fast in the rain(spinning 3rd gear) my oil pressure gauge started to leak, and there was oil out of the dipstic hole, leading me to think that one or two valves arnt closing kuss of too much lash, but also after that it felt like the carb was being goofy. Like it was flooding or out of gas, anywhoo when its rpms are raized it pops a little, and krackles like the timing is off kinna deal, so im juss kinna trying to fuigure out what it is, I also put 1 bottle of oil in and seemd to run better so mabye it lost oil and the lifters wernt pumping enough, .... Like its hard to say.. but all the feedback & stroies i can get heer will help.

Yeah, crane told me to tighten 1 1/2 turns. 666, you sure your valves aren't floating? Did you install stiffer valve springs with the bigger cam? If it runs better after a quart of oil, you have more damage elsewhere.

ya thats weird, but it might have juss been quincidence kuss i do about 10 things b4 i actualy drive it again, it juss seemd that way, but if i were to go 1& 1/2 turns i think it would run like shit, kuss if i go much over 1/2 it starts being stupid, I put the 3.1L oilpump on a 85 2.8L block with the 3.1 crank, juss kuss the 3.1L pump looked a bit bigger, so i migh be making a lot of pressure, that one day it hit mabye 60Psi+ but it runs good now, about 20-40, than when u hammer on it, its around 60 or under
Altho am still trying to prefect the carborated 3.1L manafold, there is alot of jb weld on it now, kuss i was pressure testing it and found a bunch of leaks, Its verry hard trying to weld to that CRAPPY stock cast aluminum with nice new stuff...

Well I dont know what to tell you. Do you have stock studs? And are you sure you have hydraulic lifters?

ya, there stock studs ,rockers and lifters are brand new for a 2.8L, but i think i kinda got it fixed, i lashed them all again after i put my manafold back on and they were sounding a bit better, i think that there might even be a nut loosening its self off, so im going to get new studs and nuts mabey, eventualy i wanna switch to the 3100 roller rocker heads and intake then make a upper plennum that fits some webbers, im sick of flooky holleys
