  • Head/spring/seat ?s

I am rebuilding the top end of my 3.1v6 I am using the Crane h272 camshaft and I am being told to use the LS6 Valve Springs. What retainers locks and seats should I use to make it EASY to intall in the 3.1v6 heads with out having to drill anything out.

Or is there a HIGH performance replacement that will will allow me to reuse the stock 3.1heads components ei; comp cams beehive springs (not sure if these need any work or not).

Any informational help is greatly apprieciated

I would use the comp retainers and keepers (sold on this site and other places). They are much better quality than stock. Titanium are available for weight savings but pricey. You can get the LS valve spring seats from GM and then use the LS6 springs. Comp makes a set of springs that will drop in using stock seats/seals but you still need to use the gen 3 retainers/keepers or aftermarket.

How much spring does the h272 cam call for? There should be specs on the card to help you pick out a spring. I am sure they call for their spring on it but its probably the old non beehive spring which I wouldn't use. You also need to look at coil bind. I could look it up if need be but if you can post the lift spec that would help. I think its mid .400s which would be no problem at all on coil bind. If its in the .500s let me know.

I am also using the COmp Cams 1.6 Roller Rockers.

LS6 springs, GM LS seats if you can get them (backordered on GMPD), stock seals, gen 3 retainers or comp retainers. same with keepers.

Ok then I will be buying the LS6 Valve Spring (does anyone know the part #) the LS6 Seats (So these will fit the 3.1 Heads and not have to be Drilled out? AND what is the part #) I will be using the 3400 Heads retainers? or the comp retainers and 3400 heads keepers or comp keepers.

          Is this right?

            Ok did some more research.

Here are the specs on my camshaft
World’s top manufacturer of performance camshafts, lifters, valve springs, rocker arms and related valve train parts for all race and street performance engines

It says this for the springs.
Spring Requirements: Triple Dual Outer Inner
            Part Number 99848
            Loads Closed 114 LBS @ 1.700 or 1 45/64
            Open 318 LBS @ 1.240

so in checking with the closest that comp has to offer in cams its crossreferenced springs dont even come close

COMP: 230lbs@1.25 and a seat load of 92lbs@1.7

So that means that Comp is out but crane offers a set. So I checked them out and found out that they are the dual coil NON beehive.

Damn I dont know what to do now. I guess I will have to track down the LS6 springs and extras.

Comp has springs that will work but they may require some modifications to increase install height to 1.8 (otherwise they are too stiff). I was looking them up as well:P A double spring and triple spring offers good harmonic resistance since each spring will resonate at a different frequency. Id still just get the LS6 springs though for the money. Go to lingenfelter and get a set of 16 for 65 bucks plus shipping. Thats what I do. You will have 4 extras but it seems a lot of people do. Hell, you could possibly buy some from people. I just hold onto mine so the 4th set of heads I do I will already have springs.
