ok so here is the deal i bought a 97 lumina with a 3100 former police car for 300 bucks. it had 1 head off and was partially dissasembled in the car. i want to get it back together and running fast (soon not speed0 but performing well too. it has 146k on it and i pulled the moter out, took the other head off and started cleaning it. i will post pics later. what would be the best low cost idea for my next step?should i get it rebuilt? do you think the tranny is ok or should i pull it too maybe just get the heads done if so what should i have the machine shop do to them? any ideas on the bottom end and what i should do? do i ask alot of ?'s ? no idea as to why the 1 head was off to begin with. the engine rotates freely by hand and the combustion chambers look ok, just slight carbon buildup. and ideas and help would be apriciated.

    thanks

You have a few options actually, and the best route to go depends on your resources and abilities. You an rebuild that engine, which is probably the best route if you want to use that motor. You will need to tear it down and check the bearings anyway since you don't know the running condition of the motor.

You can buy a 3400. Where are you located? Some areas are easy to find motors for cheap while others are not so lucky.

You can rebuild that bottom end and swap a better top end on. 160 hp with small port manifolds, 175 with large port (give or take, might get you to 180 or so at the crank).

What is your budget and time frame? A rebuild isn't fast this time of year for most places.

So you have 3500 to get the car running or that is what he is wasting his money on with this taurus (unless its an SHO).

Get a new motor. They are dirt cheap and already in 1 piece. 3400s drop right in for the most part. Especially if you get a 97 though id get a low milage one from a newer vehicle. I am sure you can find one in atlanta. car-part.com. You will want the large port intake setup off a 3400 or 2000+ 3100. Your stocker in the 97 is a small port/smaller intake valve version.

yea but i used some know how from doing rwd setups and now i took the TC and put it on the trans first the the engine in and it worked alot betternearly complete now all i have left is the fuel lines going to the fuel rail....the guy who started this whole thing just cut them...TARD. has anyone ever retrofitted something to the fuel rail? i know i can get fittings from summit racing ( 3min from my house ) that fit tpi fuel rails are these the same? and do you think it would be ok to splice in some new line into the factory flex line?

I'd just go to a junkyard and pick up some replacements. You don't want an underhood fire, unless you want to say good bye to the car!
