  • Headers for 96 G.P. ??

Does anyone where i can find a set a headers for a 96 G.P. 3100 , or would they have to be custom made???

  • #2
Not sure how your downpipe is if you have room to run these or not. I know my L body doesn't fit them, but they fit new grand ams.

I have no idea if they will fit, unless the angle of the downpipe on the grand am's is the same as the 96 W body.

I believe you have to either modify the downpipe and or the firewall. And IIRC they barely go around a 4t60e trans but have a little rubbing going on.

I'm referring to if you were to buy S&S headers. I plan to install my headers hopefully by the end of the year and I will do a write up

yes S&S headers will fit. You will need to cut the flange off at the end of the DP and weld the headers directly to the exhaust as the clearnce to the firewall is very close. You dont need to modify the firewall however the headers will sit almost on the firewall. When youu are in reverse or braking hard you will hear the headers tap the firewal. Installing poly inserts for your dog bones will greatly reduce the vibration that causes the tapping.

The tapping wont hurt your car or the headers and wont cause anything to blow up.

Here are some pics I took when I had my new trans installed. Mind you at this point the headers were in there for over 2 years. Im coming up on 3 years now. (each image is 1.5-2meg in size)

            Manitcor,

I see that you pulling or installing your tranny there , did you have to pull the tranny and engine to install???

They look like they could be put in from underneath to me.

and also do you have a pic. of the front header??

I dug around and found a pic of thhe fronts on the car during the orignal installaion of the headers.

Yes if you have a lift you can pull the trans out from the bottom and leave the engine where it is. Only takes about 45mins to pull a trans this way. It also made the perfect oppertunity to get a good look at how my headers held up to 2 years of service.

Have you seen the firewall from an L body? Are they simalar to your lumina? I wonder if something as simple as what you did would work for my car. Kind of hard to see with your pics if it's the same angle/space as mine. It's hard to see in person too as you well know!!

EDIT: MRHOTROD: I don't think you have to pull the tranny to put headers in

yeahoops, no your dont have too pull the trans to install, you do need to rock the engine forward though as far as you can. Though in retrospect, if you have the facilities to remove the trans and go at the rear header from the bottom then I would do it as it would be 10x easier than trying to monkey puzzle that crap from the top as I did.

As for fitting on an L-Body, I think it might work, though you might have more firewall clearnce issues than I did. Of course the only way to know for sure is to try.

You have a96, therefore it is the 3100, which is (for the purpose of the headers) the exact same engine. Really just depends on what you want... I'd get the coated w/o the cat. You could get the uncoated as well if you are saving money, but coated would be better.

Brad, when you had the headers, how much would you need to mod for the L body? More than Manitcor did?

                            I'd say a significant amount.

Oh wow cool thanks. That's quite a bit of diffrence. Can be modded but still, more work than just the end of the DP.
