  • 3.1 PushRod Mix-up

    This is a frustrating story,

I had to change my headgaskets on my 3.1, not like thats a new problem, but anyway i had my whole motor apart everything labeled and bagged so i wouldn't have any problems putting it back together..

Well come to find out only after i put it back together and hit it one time.. it ticked.. so i immediatly turned it off.. while my little cousin and his girlfriend watched.. I pulled off my valve covers and pulled the rockers off.. and i have a bent exaust "rod"...

she looks at it and says.. yea i was looking at those the other day and i got confused on where to put em back..they are all the same right../???

    needless to say..

I NOW HAVE NO IDEA..WHICH ONES GO WHERE NOW.. I hope somebody knows off hand which ones go in which position on which cyl.. i really need the help

eek, this is the 2nd person recently to damage their motor doing that. Going to have to take off the heads now Unless you are lucky and only one head was damaged...

Anywho, IIRC the exhaust ones are longer. When taknig out the push rods, you should always take some card board and put holes in it and label it and push the rods through that, so you don't get them mixed up.

But you said in the post a bent exhaust valve. I guess that doesn't make sense since the exhaust valves have the longer pushrods.

I would also check the lifters, those are more fragile than a pushrod, at least I've heard of them failing before a pushrod......

Get a chiltons or haynes manual. or perhaps take a look at the pictures on this site for info. Not sure myself, as I always mark them.

I read that post... but when he says "The order is as fallows, Exhaust ports towards you E I I E I E." Does he mean from right to left? and this is on each head correct?

Could anyone tell me if there is a difference between the heads and what not?

I am getting an engine built back up for my lumina... its a 93 block with alum heads, i have a 91 top end going on it... due to smog legalities i have to do that... Plus no top end from 93 anyways lol.

I just need to know these little things to make sure my engine is put back together... i am on a budget so i dont have money to spend fixing what my dumb@$$ broke again

Here you go. I decided to start an article (which will hopefully grow) to help answer some questions which have been coming up lately...
