I'm new to this forum, currently I have Lumina with a 3100 engine. I want to get more power out of it. I was wondering what kind of modification I can do to it, and what kind of gains I can expect from these modifications.

Edit: (How do I make my sig work?)

    What year Lumina?

If its a pre-2000 lumina then it will have the small port engine. You can swap to the larger port intakes. That'll give you a little more power. The best thing to do would be to put the 3400 heads, LS6 springs, Largeport LIM,and 3500 UIM. An underdrive crankpully will help throttle response also. While you're all torn apart, you might as well put a performance cam in it also.

As for the 00+ 3100, the top end is the same. Put the 3500 UIM and a bigger TB. Plus a cam. Underdrive pully. P&P the top-end. Better springs for higher RPMs.

If you have OBD2 you can get a DHP tuner and tune the engine. That way the engine will take full advantage of the mods.

This is all just basic stuff for N/A. There is more. You could always just keep the engine stock and build a well tuned turbo setup.

If you have the small port motor, why not just buy a whole 3400 and drop that in, or build it up first, then drop it in? A whole 3400 is about the same cost of 3400 heads /intakes and gaskets/bolts, so it makes sense just to get the whole motor (which probably has less miles) and have .3 more displacement.

Plus if you are really serious, you can put it on an engine stand before swapping, put in the cam/ UDP, etc first. Since you have to pull the motor to put in a cam anyways.

My Lumina is a '96 (If my sig worked it is on there, stupid sig). I like the idea of a turbo on it since I have yet to see a second gen Lumina with one, and if there is then it would have to be very few. I just think it would be fun to smoke other cars and see the looks of astonishment in their faces as a Lumina wastes them.

How much would a turbo setup cost? I'm not looking for anything incredible, just whatever boost my stock components can handle (although I plan to upgrade later). What kind of gains can I expect also?

The engine I have has 240000 KMs (150000 miles roughly). However, the headgasket just went and my mechanic did a complete teardown and said that the engine is incredibly clean, cleaner than some newer engines he has done. It hasn't had a hard life and has been very well taken care of. This is to give you an idea of what I am working with.

Not sure why your sig doesn't work. Probably some setting in your profile.

The only bolt on turbo setup I am aware of is on backorder with no sign right now of it being completed for future sales. Im not really sure whats going on though with it. Avoid the RSM supercharger...lots of problems now and they are limiting their support for it from what I have read. Not a good deal for the money.

You could swap on the large port manifolds with the stock heads if you wanted, or go with port work, or 3400 heads. Really depends on the budget and your goals. I would see if DHP has a computer programmer for a 96. I know they do for 97 but not all engines go back to 96 for them.

DHP told me that they would support my 96 3100 in my GP, so I figure they'll do yours too.

I'm in the same place your in, a full 3400 swap in would be nice however I don't have the skill or tools to go with a full engine swap. Plus if I swap I want to go with a cam and turbo and everything.

I say if your 3100 is still running great just don't forget engine upkeep and do the 3400 heads, 3400 lower, and 3500 upper if you can or if not a 3400 upper.

I'm sorta the same way, want to go full 3400, but my 3100 has 180k, but in good shape, and I dont have the means to do a full swap. But 3400 heads/etc were going to be too much to justify, so I went with intake manifolds. A comprimise. If you want to attempt the 3500 upper, check out my thread. It applies to you as well, but your EGR would be the round new style. So you can just get an EGR from a 2000+ car and it will bolt to the 3500 plenum, and your connector should snap in and work just fine. If you get the 3500 from a junkyard online (car-parts.com) you might end up with one like mine, which came with EGR/etc still attached.

BTW, you have to click attach signature option or it won't show your sig. In the quick reply box it does not have this option, unless you click more options link.

Thanks for the tips guys. I know for sure I will start by putting on a CAI or a FWI. After that I will have to decide what to do next. I think I will eventually put a turbo on it, but that won't be for a bit but it will give me time to save money for it. Again thanks guys

Oh and what is an EGR anyway?
