  • How to tell if heads have been shaved

How do I tell if a set of iron heads has been shaved?

On SBC's, the thickness of the bosses for the lower head bolts can be measured and compared to stock. Is there a similar tell-tale on the V6 iron heads? What should the measurement be?
    Current:
\'87 Fiero GT: 12.86@106 - too dam many valves; ran 12.94 @ 112 on new engine, then broke a CV joint
\'88 Fiero Formula: slow and attention getting; LZ8 followed by LLT power forthcoming
\'88 BMW 325iX: The penultimate driving machine awaiting a heart transplant

    Gone, mostly forgotten:
\'90 Pontiac 6000 SE AWD: slow but invisible

I would CC them with a piece of thick plastic window material with a tiny hole in it & a syringe. Just use a bit of vasoline on the valve edges & the plastic plate. I use the 90% rubbing alcohol in the syringe.

Most shops should stamp them somewhere on the surface with the amount they have been shaved.

however if the heads were part of a large batch that was intended for a racing team its possible that they might not have bothered stamping them

why do you want to know if they've been shaved?
are they warped from getting hot and you think they're already to thin?
            because I\'m not Canadian
