  • '01 3100 heads/intake on an LG5

i have found a 2001 LG8 3100 engine in the local salvage yard. the engine is bad (not sure how yet) and is already out of the car. i can get everything from the heads up for $150.

i'm not at all familiar with GEN-III stuff (yet). i was wanting to get the heads/intake/plenum off the 3100 and use it on my Turbo STE's LG5.

    - what modifications will need to be done to the valvetrain to make this work? what lifters, pushrods, and rocker arms should be used?

    - what would the CR be on a GEN-II engine with GEN-III topend?

    - would it be a better idea to just get the entire 3100 and rebuild it? and if so is 3100's 9.6:1 CR too high for 10-12psi?

i'm planning on using a GT3071R-WG turbo and would really like to upgrade the intake beforehand. i will be using TGP wiring harness and ECM/memal and a Getrag 282. i know i'll have to swap throttle cable, PS pump and modify the wiring harness but the valvetrain issue is what i'm really worried about. if anyone could give me some direction here i'd appreciate it, thanks.

I would build the 3100 personally, for the better oiling, the windage tray (though you could put a DOHC windage tray in your gen2), and the roller cam. The compession isn't anything to worry about. in fact, its better at that compression than your gen 2 motor because of the quench. Using gen 3 pistons would be the way to go if you build a gen 2 again. Compression using gen 3 heads on a gen 2 motor would go down even more I think. Maybe I posted gen 2 CC numbers but I thought it was 26.x for the gen 2 and its 28.6 for the gen 3. Deck the head to raise compression some if you want.

well i've had a change of plans. i just bought a complete 3400 LA1 for $150. i'm not sure how many miles it has, what year it is, or what it came out of. it will need to be completely rebuilt though as there is milky oil on the dipstick.

i think i'm going to forget the hybrid route and go with this instead. more cubes, better oiling, roller cam and i can keep my TSTE's good running LG5 intact. i'm probably going to have LOTS of questions later so i hope you guys can help! it will be turbocharged running TGP code with a 5-speed.
