  • 2.8 sohc to 3.4 dohc heads question

Now yes i am sure it would not be worth it if so possible. That being said........

Say i take my stock 2.8 bore it out to a 3.4. could i swap the dohc heads (using the dohc pistons) over to my newly bored 3.4? or would i still need all the computer crap for the dohc 3.4. Why do i ask this is the 3.4 pushrod the same motor as our 2.8 and isn't the only diff between the 3.4 sohc and the dohc just one is dohc (menaing interals ie pistons and then also heads ect.)

Or am i missing something here. does the intake screw things up? if so why not go dohc and swap to the carb intake?
You know that sun viser that doesn\'t quite go down when the sun is there and then when you are driving with it down and you can\'t see the stoplights ? Well... that\'s why my fiero isn\'t at the shop yet....

Uhhh, There is no 2.8L SOHC in the 660 engine family.

The only thing that is shared between the 2.8L OHV and 3.4L DOHC is the rods, and I think the timing set., oh the oil pump drive shaft and drive are probably the same. Other than that every other part is differnt, including the block.

wtf... wow, he must be thinking of a vw or audi engine or something...
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing the right way.

you cant do it. Only my 2.8 block would be capable of the modification necessary, and there is almost no chance of that ever happening. You could not oil the heads, nor cool them. just buy a dohc setup for 150 bucks.

what makes your block so special?

oiling can be done by running a tap off a sensor port much like they do for a turbo, you just have to do a lot of PITA stuff to do this. same thing for cooling. you need to pretty much have a solid head gasket with holes for the bores and bolts, only. maybe you can convert the core plugs in the heads to fittings for coolant, and tap the carrier for an oil feed line, and then you need to figure out how to get it back to the pan.

i'm sure it can be rednecked up

Not a snowballs chance in hell could it be rednecked.......

Well MAYBE if you could find someone to maching lifter bore plugs, and intall them correctly, among a shit load of other needed modificatiions, it might work. Would be cheaper to just buy a 3.4 block though.

this idea has been discussed to death.

I looked at making a 24V pushrod engine based on the DOHC heads, but due to the intake lifter (IIRC) being right smack dab in the middle of the intake port, it wouldn't work. If it wasn't for that, I would have attempted it. I even toyed with the idea of having a custom cam ground that swapped the intake and exhaust lobes, but then the cylinders on either end woud have been odd.

i think it would be sweet if someone fabbed up a set of Sohc carries for the iron head 2.8's. thats a lot of work, desigin and making cariers, rockers, the new timing, the easiest part may be the cam cover since it could be flat.

my block = open deck for custom coolant passages.
and removable lifter holder thingy to prevent internal oil leaks.
There is a thread here, search aluminum 2.8 or alluminum 2.8 not sure how I spelled it.

oh, one of those blocks. the only thing i like about those is the heads that were bolted to them. not a big fan of open decks, hondas use a "girdle" to reinforce theirs for boost. the whole multi piece construction for a block doesnt excite me.
