I have a 88 z24 with 2.8 and was wondering what kind of gains could be expected with a 3400 topend swap and if it would be worth all the work.

a top end swap by itself won't gain you a whole lot (10-15 hp, maybe) but what it does is amplify the other modifciations, the cam benefits will improve, yadda yadda yadda. Is it worth it? on it's own, probably noet, unless you can get the parts for free, but as part of an engine build, hell yeah!

Actual gains can vary depedning on the condition of the bottom end. In most cases people will upgrade other parts along the way, such as the aforementioned cam, sometime pistons, etc. If you are looking for more power this IMO is the place to start, the genII intake is quite restrictive, and seems to be the bottle neck in gaining power.
