  • Dam Intake Gaskets, HELP!!!

    Hello group, I just joined the site. I recenlty had my intake gasket start leaking on my 1999 Grand Am GT. After doing some research, Im very suprprised that my car has made it to 140,000 without any leaks. But, then again, I do all my own preventative meaintanence with great care. Im no auto technitian, but I got brave and dug into it myself. So far so good, but there is only one problem... As I was pulling the lower intake and a small brown o-ring about the size of a nickel, seemed to fall out from under the lower intake, on the side of the thermostat housing. I looked and looked to see where it might have come from, but I could not figure it out. Im not even sure if it belongs to anything having to do with the intake, it may just be a stray to something else. Im kinda curios if it belongs to the fuel rail line, maybe? Any help of suggestions would be nice. Also where can I look at some free detailed drawing for this motor?

    Sounds like one of the injector O rings. Are they all accounted for? If not, then it could be the fuel line O rings... Make sure they are all accounted for and did not drop down into the runners of your heads...

      o ring

      i did not remove any of the injectors from the intake. I left the rail and injectors on the intake. I kinda suspect that it may be from the fuel line that connects to the fuel rail. not the one that connects to pressure regulator, but the other one. Also I did not see an oring the the tip of the fuel one or inside the sealing surface of the rail line. Unless the rail line is a self sealing metal type connector, then I don't know...

        No, there is an O ring on the supply side too. You can see where it goes on the supply line, where there it there is an indent about 3/16" from the end...

          Since we are on this topic of fuel injector o-rings, If I were to swap fuel rails, I could leave the injectors in the rail and not replace the orings right? Or should I do those in addition to new ones for the manifold?

            If you get an injector seal kit from the dealership, it comes with 16 O rings. But no, it's not like it is required or anything.

              isn't there an o-ring for the line that goes out of the LIM where the stat is? i forget, is that the coolant supply to the heater core?

                Ahhh. Torq455 that's probably it. I forgot that the 99 GAGT got the 3400, which means the pipe that goes into the LIM to the heater core would have an o-ring and not the screw on fitting. I re-read the top post and he said it's the size of a nickel, which is too large for any fuel related o-ring.

                He's probably already figured it out when he put it back together and the coolant pipe leaked, then put the missing o-ring in there. Unless it's still torn apart....

                  The O rings for the injector and fuel supply line is more like the size of a dime. The O ring on the FPR is about the size of a nickel. The thermostat O ring is larger than a silver dollar, and it's less like an O ring and more like a rubber seal that folds over the lip of the thermostat... Don't think the hard line coming out of the back of the thermostat housing (for the heater core) has an O ring...

                    I think I know where the confusion is coming from on the "FPR O-ring".....
                    There is two FPR O-rings. One that seals the line inside the bottom of the FPR and one that seals in the fuel rail. The one in the fuel rail is larger and as mentioned about the size of a nickle.
