  • Ticking noise

I have a slight ticking noise in my 3.4L.

It only ticks after warm up and goes away at high revs. Loudest at idle.

I was told it was a: exhaust noise, b: conrod.

    It's annoying. N

Ticks after warm up? My 94 3100 ticks before it warms up.
Can you tell where it's coming from? Valve train, motor, or lower like exhaust. It could be exhaust leak, but motor ticking and exhaust ticking is pretty easy to tell apart by just the sound they make....

Ticks AFTER warmup. Sounds like it coming from right side of the engine. I don't believe it's exhaust. Sounds like valve train. I'm thinking it may be a bad lifter.

Oh yeah. It only has 20K on a brand new (not rebuilt) engine.

Hmm. I've heard the ticking before warm up is the hydrualic lifters then they get oil and quiten down, and I've also heard it's piston slap. No idea what your's is but it might not be good that's for sure.

I use an empty christmas wrapping paper tube to pinpoint noises. Hold it up to one ear & plug the other. Point the tube around the source of noise & it will be the loudest when directly pointed at the noise. You can actually hear your TBI injectors firing.

You mean port injectors. TBI is throttle body injection. Unless you have dual throttle body injection motor! (you said injectors...) hah.

ticking AFTER warm up isn't exhaust. if it's exhaust, it would make noise as long as the engine is running. might try unpluging one fuel injector at a time to see if it's not a lifter. usually a lifter will tick almost all the time.

It's a carburetted 3.4L, single cam, iron heads.

It quiets on mid to higher RPMs.

                Sounds like no 2 cyl.

yeah, sounds like a lifter. it gets quieter with more oil pressure.
