I think the getrag found on 3.1/2.8 motors is the beefiest and it's commonly the go-to trans used on v8 archie fiero swaps. So with a strong clutch and axles it's pretty tough.
Of course I don't know if those with monster engine behind them are driven with care or beat on, but they appear to hold up. Probably with care if they don't want to light up the tires every upshift.
There is a stronger getrag on the 3.4dohc W bodies but those are extremely rare, parts are even rarer(non-exsistant??) and I'm not sure the benefit you'd get out of it...

getrag gets a little shakey around the 400 hp mark. Turboz24 has the fastest j-body out there--12.3@113mph on only 10 psi i believe? still, the dead stop launching will kill that tranny after a while. in about 15K miles, he's gone through a tranny, but the first one the case cracked.Andy

and the differential exploded. Not to mention several failed stock axles as well as 2 DSS stage 3 axles I paid a decent amount for.
You are frankly better off using an auto if this is going to be mostly a drag car. You can preload the driveline, etc and for around 2000, there are lots of places that will build up either a 125C or a 4T60 (non electronic).
Yes, the 12.3 run was on 10 psi without the tune the car currently has. I got 310.2 wheel HP at 7 psi with some ignition issues still (and still too rich). When I launched at 16 psi, the axle blew on the launch, so I've never gotten any successful runs after that 12.3.

the getrag 282 is about the best tranny we have. it will take some power and last a while. they are most common in a cavalier/sunbird, however they are in the w-bodies as well. the w-body may be the best bet, as it will mount simularly to the way the fiero mounts.
there is some different gearing for it. if you have a look at the getrag 282 section on the sidebar, all the gearing is listed there.

If this is for autoX/road racing, then lots of power really isn't required. The only real issue is getting an LSD.
When I downgrade mine back to a stock motor (3.1, maybe 3100/3400 if I feel like it), I might autocross/road race it. It's got all the brakes and suspension I need for that.

If you are willing to spend around 1400 for one, sure.

accually, I'm not sure what vehicle you were planning on putting the trans in, but N-body also offered a manuel for both the 4 and V6. it was an option that was fpr the lower SE moddle. and not very many ordered. it's a specian thing! and probably the same trans there talking about!2002 Pontiac GrandAm GT1

The 92-94 and 91-93 W41 282 ratios and 284 ratios look good. It is for a 3.4L V6. Is the 284 any better then the 282? I assume the W body has newer transmissions. Also, does the 3.9L have the same bolt pattern? I think the Quad four only has 4 of the 6 bolt holes that match the V6. This may not be a problem. The MT2 ratios are not good for my application, but the specs show a maximum engine torque of 245#-ft. Is there any info on torque for the 282 or 284? Any info would be helpful.

284 from the W body z34 dohc 3.4 is pretty rare. For all intents and purposes the 282 is just as good and more common.
By 3.9L are you talking about the 3900 v6 motor? If so yes it will bolt up to a gm fwd transmission, but I don't know about a fly wheel you'd use. I assume you have a vehicle with the 3900, otherwise I don't think anyone has swapped this motor and I'm not sure how you'd control all the new stuff on it (varible intake/etc) or if the crank sensor wheel is different...sigpic New 2010 project (click image)
