  • best single performance mod for under $200?

have a friend that just purchaced a 3400 Impalla '03? wants some more "pep" without breaking the bank. havn't found an intake for this application yet, and S&S headers are $560 so those are out of the question. what's a remaping of the PCM run? and what are the gains?

    thanks,
    Arty

I would go with a DHP 1.0 PCM. They have lowered the pricing to $100 now, and it has been a proven mod for alot of people. Not only will the shift points be raise and the shift be a little firmer, the timing will be slightly increased and the fans will stay on after he shuts the car off for exta cooling.

With the other $100 I would save for something bigger in the future.

or get a new (less restrictive) muffler and have it installed and still have a lil left over

Id save for the programmable DHP setup so that any future mods can be accounted for in the computer.

For this guys wants, I think the DHP 1.0 and a homeade intake would be a nice addition. It'd be a bit throatier, but still quiet, and it'd probably have atleast 10hp over stock. That seems like a nice way to spend $200 to me.

            14.60 @ 96.33 for now...

idk, he could drop more weight and pick up a lil more power from the exhaust....i would prolly add 50 to the budget and do the intake too though

buy a cone air filter, what 30 bucks, 15-20 on ebay

diff muffler theres some cheap ones for under 50.

maybe some larger pipe from the cat to the muffler as well

                should be around 200

well the intake (home made) is a given, knowing how restrictive the factory stuff is. i was thinking a muffler as well but volume becomes an issue, and i can't think of any QUIET performance mufflers.

where do i get the PCM programer and for how much? what gains are seen (objectively)?

i was also thinking of fabricating an undertray for better air flow (help with efficiancy).

the plugs are comming out in favor of standard resistor type... i found that these blocks like them better than the platinum counter part.

so the pricelist comes out like this:
                  plugs- 1.89 ea. (12.02 w/ tax)
home made intake- $25 for filter, $15-30 for the tubes and connectors
                  DHP 1.0- $???
muffler- about $80 (flowmaster 60 series)

can anyone fill in the blanks/add to the list?

                  thanks,
                  Arty

haha you want a quiet muffler and buying a flowmaster

60's should be fine tho depends on what u call quiet. just geta 40

increase the pipe size fromt the cat back

He can get an FFP underdrive pulley for the 5-10 hp increase. It's $110 shipped. Then you still have enough for a K&N drop-in filter ($35.69 plus S&H) and have enough green backs for an oil filter change too!

the dhp reprogramed PCM would be better because it will decrease shift time and effectively remove the speed limiter and give you a better tune

it was said somewhere earlier in this thread that its around $100 now

that along with the homemade intake and free flowing muffler should give you a noticeable increase in performance

                            uhhh... no

your money will be gone after buying the basic stuff (bottle and selonoids) and not to mention you would still have to fill it.... and then keep refilling it
