  • paying $5400 for: .020 over & forged pistons.Is it Price

    Im paying a local engine shop to bore my engine 20/over, replace the pistons with bigger forged pistons and do all the work associated with it.
    Such as. Deassemble the engine and the car, And assemble the engine and put it back together. Now the guy has took 4 weeks already, Im geeting kind of skepticle. He says that it takes 3 weeks to make the custom pistons. I just want to know if any one thinks this is to much money for the job. Thsnks

    If its just a stock rebuild short the forged pistons, and you are paying to have it pulled, torn down, put back together, and put back in the car...you are paying at least 2000 more than you should. Pull it and put it back in should be around 700-800. Perhaps im wrong there but when I had my 3.1 done in 99, it was supposed to cost 650. 550 for pistons. Everything else being standard operation bore, hone I dont see it being so much on labor. Now if you are having more work done, that will change things.

      you're gettin ripped, we can have the teardown, new pistons paid for & installed for 1k or less around here (supposedly 6-800 for 30 over). then the cost of the pistons?

        Forged pistons - 6-700
        Remove engine and tear down - 8-900
        Bore, hone , rebuild - 1500
        put back in car 1000

        I have you at 4100 minus other parts such as gaskets , rings bearings , etc etc tec , so say 4650 or so i think is fair game.

        Most time you pay for what you get , not always the case , but if he's honest he is a lil bit high on the price but the engine work should be perfect and very detailed for that price.

        My verdict , that is definately on the high side.

            Gotta remember the guy is more than likely not familiar with that engine either. He's probably taking extra time and doing extra research to make sure it gets done right. That would probably get added into the cost... time is money after all. Most places I've talked to about doing an engine on a 60v6 have been hestitant or simply didn't want to do it for that reason. They only know V8's. And this is in the motorcity for god sake!

              If they have never worked on a 60V6, they either only do imports or V8s, or just started working on cars. There are too many 3100/3400 motors out there for these places not be inexperienced or for you to deal with places that aren't familiar with it.

              Find a place that knows the motor or find 1 place to pull it and put it in and another place to rebuild it.

                  Yeah to me it is because that is one more thing that he has to tear apart and the reinstall.
