'02 was the last year for the z24, the 2.4 died with it and was replaced with an LS and the 2.4 with an eco-tec. we know it isnt the 2.4, so its got to be the ohv or the eco-tec. i'm pretty sure the 2.4 and the ecotec weren't available the same year, BUT not according to edmunds.com:

he may have something to worry about. if it says eco-tec, he's most likely boned.

and if your modding your car to race a stock one, thats kinda , your getting out of "class" there. if he's expecting to race stock vs stock, that means you'd be cheating.
If you aren't friends with a liar, you aren't friends with anyone.

in 02, you could have a 2.4, 2.2 ohv or 2.2 eco. this was the only year for all 3. 2003 the 2.2ohv and 2.4l died, and all cars came with the ecotec, base or ls (actualy a Z-type in canada)

he says unless i turbo/supercharge/run nos, theres no way i can keep up because my car is too heavy lol, i told him what im gonna do & he says it doesnt matter, he'll still win. also i dont brag about my car because honestly its not the fastest that ive owned, one night we were just bullshitting & he started talking about how fast his car was & all i said was, "i bet i can take it", then he went on this rant about how his car was pretty quick & would eat mine because of the weight difference.

2002 chev cavi 2.2 ecotec stock, assuming ls 2door trim level: 140hp @5600 150ft.lbs @4000 2800lbs minimum for an automatic.

          1996 lumina 3100 assuming 2door 160hp @5200 185 ft.lbs @4000 stock. 3380lbs ls sedan trim

cavi is sitting on 18.6 lbs/hp stock

lumina is sitting on 21.1 lbs/hp stock

you will have to have 208 hp just to play ball, that dosent consider gear ratios. you will probably take him off the line, but he will take you within 150 ft IMO. the cavis arent that bad, if you can hold the gears some, and wind the engine good you might not loose by too much, and you can hope you get him out of the hole and keep the lead.

you can do some weight reduction i.e back seats spare tire ect. run as little gas as possible, and run as high octane as you can to reduce detonation, offer to fill his tank up, anything to get an edge. also running light weight oil like 5w 30 and going synthetic will help your power more than what you think, short fill it by half a quart or so to reduce windage, lower temp t-stat, higher pressure in your rear tires to reduce friction, a fresh tuneup with plugs and wires, it all helps.

as to swapping heads, i do not know, if the combustion chamber is larger you might loose power do to lost compression. but you could have them milled. higher ratio rockers can give you a some power. i do no know what the 3400 intakes are worth. a cold air (or ram air)intake is usualy worth 5-10 hp, but i have seen higher gains before. a good high flow exhaust can be wirth 10-15 hp, but you will lose torque down low. headers are worth a good 15-20 hp normaly, stock exhaust manifolds suck nuts on just about every car. do whatever you can do, and can afford to do.

SPEED COSTS MONEY! if you do it right the first time, you waste less and can afford more later. make a plan and stick to it and you should be fine. good luck
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing the right way.
