  • 96 lumina 3100 vs 2k2 cavalier 2.2

a friend of mine really thinks he can easily beat me in his 2001 chevrolet cavalier, now i havent asked him which motor it is yet, but im assuming the worst which is that it is the 150 hp 2.4l that chevy put in them. now i know for a fact that the motor is 100% stock & hes not going to do anything to it (he claims that he doesnt have to, because my car is so much bigger & heavier). now what im asking is can anyone help me find the roundabouts weight for my car & his, & help me figure out how much hp i would have to add to take him in a 1/4 mile (assuming that he does have the 2.4 and not the crappy 2.2). tonight im gonna look at the weight stickers on both of them & find out how much each weighs, & find out which motor his has. my question to you guys is do you think i can take him?

despite being heavier, you should be able to take him

stock for stock, even if he has th 2.4? i plan on running either 1 or 2 straight pipes to virtually straight through mufflers, & setting up a "ram air" setup (i still need to find a hoodscoop that sits 4 inchs or so up, so i can fit the airfilter in it) which is basically a ram air-air filter the is ran up so that the air oncoming at the car is being rammed into it and right into the intake.

my car wieghs 4500lbs, i have to go check his wieght but thats a 20 min walk. oh & both cars are automatic. im estimating that his car weighs 2500lbs & by doing a hp per pound calculation that means i need 280 hp to beat him & i kinda dont think that-is right (although that doesnt take into account gearing, rpm, torque, & other factors).

I ran neck to neck with a cavi in my miata through 3 gears before i had to let off for a turn (i had to exit). and thats just a little 1.6 the cavi's are slow. if he has an auto that'll slow him down more.

4500lbs is probably the gvwr, not the weight as it sits on your curb. likley you should take 900-1100 lbs of that. my v6 4x4 auto explorer weighs in around 4200 and its the trimmed out eddie bauer edition. it should be a fairly even race, but keep in mind luminas aren't sold as "sporty". if your friend doesnt have a Z24 cavilier, then it isnt the 2.4 dohc. just a 2.2 ohv, which means your probly gonna win. if tis a z24 5 speed, dont be to broken hearted if he wins. it might be short 25hp on you but it is 1000lbs lighter.
            him, 2600lbs/150hp = 17.3lbs/1hp.
            you, 3500lbs/175hp = 20lbs/1hp.
and i dont think the 3100 was 175hp till its its later years much after '96.

actualy, the 3rd gen cavy isnt that slow. the 2.2l is a bit of a dog at 115hp, they run mid 17s. however, a 2.4 twin cam, despite being rated at 155hp, they have a p9ile of torque for a 4 cyl, at 150ft/lb, and will run a mid 15 with a 5 speed, and an auto will run low 16s. a 3rd gen cavy weighs in around 2800lbs. when you compare it to other cars in its class( civic si for exampe), the cavy is a dog.

your lumina, at 160hp/195tq and 3500lbs (aprox), im gonna say if his is a 2.4l, he will kill you. they arent exactly a slow car from the factory.

                this

                2.4 dohc -150 hp
                3100 pushrod-160 hp

im going to find out which motor & what weight his is by 4:00, both crs are 4 doors & both are 4 speed automatics, but im starting to believe that his is the 2.2 (its an ecotech motor by the way) and if it is im going to stomp him. oh and by the way, did chevy put the 2.4 in any of the cavaliers other than the z24? because if they didnt then he for sure has a 2.2 .

just checked out his car, its a 100% stock 2002 (i was wrong about the year) chevy cavalier with a 2.2 ecotech motor & it weighs 900 lbs less than my car but has about 100 extra lbs of stereo system & has (currently) 45 less hp (im still going to do my exhaust & intake setup like i talked about, so that should be just a tad bit more).

i raced one of those lil 2.4 cavis once in my 97 lumina. I don't have a converter and i put a 56mm TB on it and up to 50 mph i slowly pulled ahead. i'm sure gearing has something to say about it all too. those 2.4's do have a pretty flat torque curve too.

that 2.2 ecotec is 140hp dohc 16v motor, it cant be too crappy if chevy used it as a replacement for the 2.4 dohc 16v. it is also all aluminum so take 100lbs of the weight of his car. but since its an automatic it should be a close race i think.

thats a stupid statement, if he doesn't beat you i'd be suprised, basic bolt ons they run mid to low 15's and i've seen one that has.

ecotec is no dog and a hell of an engine especially with boost

haha my saturn before boost when it was n/a with bolt ons would prolly give you a run

the eco is a stout motor. even though they are rated at 140hp, people say they feel faster than a 2.4l. they will run mid-high 15s stock with an auto.

thats teh thing though, those motors arent rated 140, they're rated (at least his-is) at 115 hp. also i drove his other one, a 98 (which is rated at 5 more hp), & it was a dog when compared to my lumina (which my lumina is a dog when compared to my old lumina eurosport, which is a 4 dr z34 & was very fast lol). im pretty confident that im going to give him a good ass whipping.
