  • Ignition Timing.....

First off, I'll make sure to mention I'm running a Haltech E6K Programmable Computer......So anyways....
I haven't had much luck here, but I'm trying to find some info on what can be run for timing in a heavily modified 3.1....When I had the 2.8 motor in I made a basic timing map off of the stock 2.8 Timing map, after talks with my dad, I learned that it can have more timing that what they do have....
Anyone have suggestions on what to run for cruising speed, and what "vacuum" advance I can run...right now I'm running 10* at idle at ~840 EGT and cruise RPM 1500-2500 ~38* at ~1100 EGT. The plugs look fine and the car runs good with no popping, at full throttle its around 35 with signs of detonation w/91 Octane running a little on the rich side for safety until ~5800 when the injectors we have in it now start to fall behind....
I'm just trying to get it as good as I can until it starts warming up and we throw the turbo/injectors and all the fun stuff back on

Like I said, finding internet pages that talk about adjust timing for a Distributorless ignition system isn't very common, so anyone with any comments, ideas, tips, whatever, lets here em, I've got time to try lots of stuff....I had one guy send me a GMPCM file, except the download database is down and I don't have the install file or a PCM file to read it with

35 at WOT is a lot higher than I have run any 3.1. 10 is much lower than stock idle spark advance as well. I do everything based on RPM vs MAP so if that is how ecomputer is setup I can help you out.

Yes, that is how it is setup, RPM vs. MAP *Vacuum/Boost* when running a 2/3-bar obviously, with the 1-bar it's just the Vacuum. Yes, 10* is much lower than stock if I remember, its like 15-18 isn't it? I just went off the advice my dad gave me from all the years of racing, and building cars and what not. It seems to run fine with 10* at ~1000 RPM idle, its really picky about idle, likes to start hunting at idle and attempt to die, so I keep it at 1000 so it doesn't annoy me. Yes, 35 is a lot higher than regular, but it takes it fine, and I've been wondering, how come they have so little of timing, my dad was saying they used to run around 44* in their dragster, and even his 383 had 38 or so.
Any help/tips I'd be interested in seeing.
      Thanks

Iron heads need much more advance than aluminum. 35 is nuts at WOT, that and on the dyno I saw no power change from 18-26 at WOT. I keep it around 22-24 at the higher RPM and WOT. The DOHC I keep it near 27 degrees. Any more and you HAVE to run premium...and with no power increase on the dyno I dont care to have to run premium when mid grade does just as well I dunno what compression you are running though.
