  • hello i have a few questions

hello i hope i can get some help here
1st question is my buddy had a stock 91 3.1 and he put a comp cam in it and was could keep up with my friends monte carlo which had a 400 in it.
and on the local cruise strip he would rip up other z24's and when they would catch up to him at the next light they would say what the hell do u got in that thing. now at the time i oned late 60's early 70's firbirds and t/a's so i really never payed a whole lot of attention to his car. but now things changed and i sold all the muscle cars and now own a 92 z24 man how things change lol. so my question was what cam would give me good hp and torque. and would it set off the check engine light.

and my next question i currently have a 3-speed auto and i want an overdrive trans. what would bolt up and run no prob. or how could i gear either the 3-speed or overdrive tranny to 3.73.

and one last question i was curious about the 3400 swap if i hooked it all up right would the 3400 run right with the origanal 3.1 injectors with no computer modding and would the check engine light be on or not.

thanks for all the help and sorry for the long read. also the reason i worry about the check engine light is because we have emmision testing.

i have a comp cams 260h2. its very good for top end, and have a very nice lope. anything more will be tough for emmissions testing.

you theoreticaly could use a 440t4 4 speed in your car, but its a ton of work, and they arent that good a tranny, especialy if you beat on it. you would need all the parts from a beretta to do the swap (axles, shifter, cable, mount, ect). it would be far more advisable to do a 5 speed swap.

a 3400 will pretty much drop in. you need a custom front engine mount (enough people make em now) a different throttle cable, rad hoses, and move some wiring around. it will run ok off the stock injectors and ecm, however many people find it best to throw some 19lb 5.0l mustang injectors in. shouldnt have any CEL issues with it.

i would use the 5-speed but i hate stick. i had a 93 z24 stick a 68 firebird stick and a 88 mustang 5.0 stick and i hate em i rather have auto it's just that it is is taching 3grand or so at 70 and i would rather it tach 2000 at 70

so the cam that you have does not set the light and does it put out a lot of torque from a dead stop punch.

my motyor is a 2.8l, so torque isnt like a 3.1l. i also have shorty headers, favoring high end power. overall, my motor was built for top end. i can still let the clutch out (a bully stage 3) at idle and not stall it. it has pretty good pickup but it realy starts to haul around 3k rpm. no CEL at all. OBD1 cars realy dont have much that will set a check engine light unless there is a sensor or component failure. you may end up with some less than ideal running issues. i find my car is very rich at idle when cold (or before when it would drop out of open loop due to the o2 sensor cooling down) and tends to load up.
