Actually, the LS1 and LS2 springs are not the same. Never heard of an LS4 though? During LS1 production the LS6 was the high-po motor and had stiffer springs. The LS1 springs had a yellow stripe painted on them and the LS6 the whole spring was green. When the LS1 was replaced with the LS2 they upgraded the LS2 to the old LS6 springs and changed the color to yellow but the spring rates are the exact same. Then they gave the LS7 a different spring that was stiffer and different diameter.
To answer some of the questions here very simply... the stock LS1 springs are barely stiffer than stock 3400 LA1 springs, and mostly have a little more seat pressure when the valve is closed. It's a good spring to use to eliminate valve float if you are modding a 3400 but using a stock cam. If you are switching cams at all or increasing lift in any way they are not enough and you should get LS6 springs. Those should be able to go up to .56" lift safely at our installed height. Any more lift than that or if you're planning on crazy rpm and I'd go to the comp springs.

Sorry despite what you say my info is direct from GM Service Information. I know can double check it too. Who cares what colour the spring was painted it doesn;t mean it is a different spring. The LS4 is in the new FWD cars.

Exactly what I said. Just because they are a different color doesn't mean they are a different spring. The LS2 and LS6 are the same spring painted different colors. I'm getting my info from GM service too.... my dad was a parts manager and I had him look it up for me from about 4 different sources. I have the printouts right here in front of me. I researched it thoroughly before I installed my cam.

Well the cam I am looking at comes with springs, but says 5K RPM peak range... I wanted more than 5k and if those LS6's are beyond 5k (6k) range for me, then I can spend less and get a better cam with just lifters leave out there springs (because I am getting the LS6's) .

You know, you can't cover the entire RPM range with one cam. MOST cams are rated with a range that covers low-end, mid-range, or high-end on RPM's.

Sounds like you need to ask for a cam that has a high-end range for what you're wanting, and that would probably kick off around 3k+ RPM's. If you want a higher range, chances are you'll need to up your stall speed on your torque converter so you'll be in peak range when you kick.
I know that a cam is only for certain rpm. I wanted something that is good for mid range, but will not fall on it's face in the upper end like it does normally. My converted is already swapped for a higher stall. The springs are for basically insurance so if my trans decided to burst and makes the engine over rev, it'll have a better chance at living.

Would LS6 retainers fit properly if I got those instead of the Gen 3 retainers?
They should. In fact they should be exactly the same retainers. They use the same locks as well.
I wouldn't bet on that. The LSx may use the same lock. But the only thing the 3400 and LSx share is the stem diameter so that is why the lock would be the same. But the install height is different and so is the valve stem length. So unless the P/N matches I wouldn't coun't on the parti interchanging.
But maybe someone has a set of both and has confirmed they match. I have a LS6 retainer I could measure up and check if someone can do the same to a 3400 one.
I have a set of both and installed both and measured spring height and they were the same. The LSx retainers looked like they might have been a tiny bit thicker (hard to tell and the diff was so small I couldn't measure it with the caliper I have), but they sat at the same height on the valve stem which is really the important thing. Also I have the part number for the 3x00 retainers. I couldn't find the part number for the LSx retainers on gmpartsdirect, but the number for the 3x00 retainer listed applications for most 3.1/3.4L V6's as well as chevy 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0L V8's. I've known that site to sometimes have mistakes or ommisions in it's catalogue, so they may well be the same number for the LSx.
Regardless of that, the fact is I tested them and they are in fact interchangable.
