Posted this on v6z24, but alot of you guys arent on there...

building headers, well atleast starting them.

i'll just let the pics do the talking, i hope my design isnt critisized too much lol i did it for fitment with the stock fan, as well as length (going for aprox 38" primaries) all the pictures are of my front bank. i have yet to tack up the rears.

I would put some heat shielding between the pan and the primaries, and around the starter. Other than that, looking awesome Let me know how it is for tuning with those primaries, and where you end up with the O2 sensor. Or are you going to run a stand alone setup with 2 O2s?

looks good, deffinetly no need for an oil heater for you though

If you can afford it ceramic coat them. Also wrap the area by the pan in header heat wrap.

Keeping the heat in will also improve flow and keep the O2 sensor hot for improved closed loop operation. It is also good for the CAT converter and in turn your emissions.

most ceramic coatings dont do much more than make the headers look good, swain coatings is a good company and altough their ceramic coating may not look as good it far out performs the usual "ceramic" coating

if you use header wrap, a nice little trick is to soak it in water, you'll get a tighter fit and you wont get the dust all over you

            Very nice!
I need to get my motor assembled so I can start designing my own as well.
Make sure you post the final product.

i had heard good things about jet hot coatings, there is a place in richmond that will do it (guy i talked to has a funny car and his headers are coated with em.)

also with the shielding, i was thinking of putting an oil cooler in, apperently the olds vans with the 3400's came with them stock.

-thanks for the POSITIVE suggestions though... i appreciate it

Still feeling sorry for your oil.

Just curious, why is everyone running such long primaries and running under the oil pan, like that?

I'd much rather run over the tranny, or at the very least choose a very different route than under the pan. Road clearance is not much there.

I think if it was me and wanted to run under the pan, I'd actually modify teh pan to let the what would be the Y pipe, run along the passenger frame rail, similar to how the I4 cars run them. You could build a much better, tighter (primaries closer together) header that will cool the exhaust in a uniform way. I think if there was some serious testing done, it would be found that the primaries are getting too cool as they go under the pan, due to disipation into the pan, and the cooling effect that air passing that area has.

I've never understood the thinking that "Hey I'll just put a band-aid on the situation I've created that I could have avoided by doing something differently in the first place."

not everyone is. i built a set of headers with aprox. 22" primaries. the front header goes towards the front of my engine, and down. the collector is just above the frame section and i have a 2" pipe runs off the colector under the oil pan (its actualy about an inch away from the pan) in the notched area (gen 1 motor, has a bigger notch then a gen 2). yes it still has a pipe running under the pan, however its one pipe, and its at the front of the pan.

no pics of them in the car, so you have to imagine them in there.

as for running them over the tranny, i dont like that idea. something about smoking hot primary tubes next to your air intake just doesnt seem like a good idea.

long primaries mean more low end. i actualy figured it out and around 37" is a good match for our little v6's for optimum balance between torque and hp.
