  • 3.1 engine buildup pricing

I own a 3.1 short block that came out of a 99-00 gm car, I am not to sure on the year. I have completely torn the engine down about a year ago and found that one of the rod bearing spun and the crank needs to be truned. The engine has roller cam & rockers. I believe it is a gen III but will be checking into it (the motor is at my parents house). I also dont have the intake or oil pan. Would it be possiable to use the lower intake off of my fiero 2.8 (I dont think I can but I had to ask), and if I found a lower intake for the engine can I use my injector's and fuel rail?

I would like to build the engine to handle ~15lbs of boost and am trying to put together a price list of things I will need to make this thing reliable.
I plan on porting the heads, intake, polishing the rods, making headders, and a stand alone engine mangement system.
This is what I have so far

    Bearings rod & main $65
    High pressure oil pump $80
    ARP Head Stud set $220
    3 angle vale job $125
    Gaskets $75
    Timing chain $40

    Pistons $???
    ARP main & rods $???
    Shot peen the rods $???
    Balance lower assm. $???
    Head gasket (hold boost) $???
    LS-1 valve springs $???

I know I forgot stuff so feel free to add anything. Links to sights that have the parts would be nice also, I got most of the prices form summit and rock auto.

    Thanks for your help

if you got it from a 99 grand am or something then its a gen 3 motor.

You will need the gen 3 oil pan. Also a 87 or 88 timing cover to fit that oil pan.

Hyper pistons at a minimum for boost. forged for peace of mind

Budget $6-7k for your motor and turbo.

It may be a good thing to drop compression some since you are going to run 15 psi.

I was thinking about going 8.9:1 or so.
Dose anyone know where you can get some forged pistons??

What is the going rate to have your lower end balanced?

Has anyone here had there rods shot pened?

          Stock 3.1 is 8.9:1.

As for where to get forged pistons, you just need too call up a piston Mfg (Ross, JE, etc) and just get them direct. Sure, J-body Performance has them listed, but they want way more than you can get them for direct. They list them for 1032 with pins and rings. Well.... Ross charged me 550 for pistons with pins, then moly rings run 50, so direct you save 432 bucks.

With running boost, I wouldnt have the c/r any higher than 8.5:1. I know some people run SBC rods in the 2.8's, so couldnt you run them to drop your c/r? Just an idea.
Tuning a car is full of compromises. You must decide if you are willing to give up either reliability, performance, or a whole load of cash. Also remember that repairs will seem to come up much more often as you strive for even more performance

the 2.8 and 3.1 run the same rods, 5.7" center too center. You can use SBC Rods if you machine the big end narrower and either order the pistons with a SBC wrist pin or use a bushing on the SBC Rod.

i would keep the stock rods and get forged dish pistons with an 8:1 c/r

oh and watch out with that high flow oil pump, ive heard of some pretty nasty things happening to the bottem end with them

yeah!!! you really need a bigger capacity oil pan for the HV oil pump.

Does anybody else have something to add to a 3100 being rebuilt for boost?

I will also be rebuilding my 3100 for boost soon and I'd like to get a list of parts together and the budget calculated.

                      Cringe....

That is my engine rebuild, Crower Sportsmans Rods, *premodified for V6*, JE Pistons, ~9.5:1 compression,Crower Custom Grind cam, etc. etc.

Its a little overboard, but hey, it takes 12psi of boost like a champ and has no problem running 6500 RPM with a now hurting 4t60 in a heavy TGP
