  • taking pollution pump off of a 92 3.1l firebird & tech p

i have a friend that has suggested that i remove my pollution pump & disconnect the AC compressor in order to gain a couple more hp, now considering he has done the same with a lot of his stuff & it has came out successful (the mid to late 80s 2.8's), & also considering the fact that around here we never have to worry about getting E-checked/i dont intend to take this car on any long trips, do you guys think that it would but worth doing, & would it cause problems with the computer?

on another note, i have noticed that my car emits an awful lot of white smoke (my friend referred to it as a "frieght train"), & that when idling it doesnt stay constant even when warm-it drops some & then picks up (does this the whole time), i suspect that my o2 sensor is junk but i dunno if that has any bearing on this... any ideas guys?

I your car is always emitting white smoke then you are burning coolant.

You can remove the AIR pump the ECM will not know. However you will shorten the life of your CAT converter if you still have one. The power gain will be minimal at best the pump is basically a fan. I makes next to zero pressure.

You don't need to disconnect the AC compressor just dont use the A/C or Defrost and it will be an idler pully and wont use any power.

Your car is not entering closed loop, it would seem...oh wait this is a fi sorry..

then it may have a mild rich or moderate lean condition, check the plugs look for pink or green residue.

How much smoke we talkin...Alot then eeee rebuild or replace time.

Valve train can leak enough oil to smoke a good amount but only on off idle to mid rpm usually. If seal and guides bad enough then the engine can emit enough smoke like you say, but then that would mean almost every seal and or guide is bad.

Do a compression check while the engine is hot.

Any oil smoke will be blue. He says he has white smoke. That means water.

I'm probably wrong, but wouldn't the O2 sensor see a rich condition without the extra air pumped in by the AIR system?

                No.
Air is never pumped into the exhaust system when in closed loop.
