  • top ring gap tolerance??

So im building a 3.1L engine and the pistons im putting in say that the ring gap should be 40% more than stock. The site says that the ring gap should be within (inches) .006 and .015, and 40% on to those sizes is .008 and .021 so should I pick .008 or .021. being that .008 is pretty much the stock size it confuses me

    RE: top ring gap tolerance??

I think it depends on what you are doing with the motor. Higher output/heat could need more gap. im surprised the rings dont tell you the exact gap to use under different running conditions like turbo/sc/nitrous and power output.

Does KB make off the shelf 60v6 pistons? or was this a custom ordered set?

Agree'd with Ben on the gap.

Top Ring gaps Gap per inch of bore diameter
          .004 - street performance
          .0045 - drag/oval track
          Nitrous(street) .006
          Nitrous (race) .008
          Supercharged .006

Second ring Gap per inch of bore diameter
          .003 - street performance
          .0035 - drag/oval track
          Nitrous(street) .005
          Nitrous (race) .0065
          Supercharged .005

On a side not gapping the second ring slighty larger than the top ring is the current trend as this allows the inter ring pressure to escape during the up stroke and keep the top ring fully seated , helping overall sealing which means more power.
