  • The new LZ family of engines

Thought I'd post some interesting new facts on the new family 60degreev6 "LZ" engines These are the "High Value" engines.
3900 "LZ9" V6 and its related smaller brother the 3500 "LZ4" and "LZE"

NOTE: this is not the same 3500 we've seen in the past few years here. This is a new 3500 variant. Yeah can get quite confusing..

The 3900 and 3500 LZ engines share the same block.

    3.9L displacement, (238cid) 99mm Bore, 84mm stroke. (yes LS1's have a a 99mm bore too)
    3.5L displacement 99mm bore 76mm stroke

Block centerline is changed by 3mm.

Camshaft bearings are larger journal diameter (55mm now up from 51mm we are used to) to accomodate larger camshaft profiles.

9.8:1 compression ratio (at least for the 3900, havn't checked the 3500 yet)

Camshaft phasing, which can advance and retard the camshaft 25 degree's throughout the powerband to create a broad flat torque/powerband.

Tuned Plenum with Intake Manifold Tuning Valve, -opens and closes dual ports in the plenum to create a low and high rpm runners/plenum.
The 3900 uses a larger ported lower Intake manifold,

There is a larger 72mm throttle body on the Plenum,

Heads are different, and do not share any related component with previous 60v6 heads. 47.5mm (1.87inch) Intake valves and 38.7mm (1.52inch) exhaust valves are in the heads which feature revised port shapes and different combustion chamber shapes. as far as the rockers all I know is that "Features rocker arms similar to those found on LS1 V8's" What the actual ratio is not sure if its still 1.6:1 or now 1.7:1 like the LS engines.

Exhaust manifolds are new redesigned and tuned for maximum performance (as per what GM claims anyways)

Each cylinder bores have piston oil squirters to keep pistons cool.
Features a High volume oil pump to accomodate the larger oil system requirements from the squirters and as well as the cam phaser actuator setup. The Oil pump drive gear is different and cannot be interchanged withe the previous engines drive gear.

New style Delphi Multec 3.5 injectors featuring new design features.

New redesigned Cooling system which flows the coolant through and around the block in a different more uniform path through the engine.

There are other small changes and whatnot that I know I'm missing.

Drool Very cool stuff. Id like to check out the heads and see what they changed as far as shape goes. Im gonna need a new setup for the flowbench to go to that bore size. Fun fun fun

RE: The new LZ family of engines

As usual, Colin is behind the times...

Here is a pic of the 3500 in the gallery (that has been viewed 202 times... not sure when I put it up):

And although I don't have one on the 3500 yet, here is GM's press release on the 3900 (which has 142 reads):

Marty and I have been discussing the differences between the 2 types of 3500s for several months, and I know I've brought up on here a couple times as well, along with a couple times on GAGT. I'll see if GM has any release data on the 3500 yet.

Ok, I'll put this on the new site, but here is the link from GM Media:

I figured you'd post something like that Brad. Just trying to help give out some more info. I know most of it has been posted in those articles. Helps get people talking about it though.

However I don't see the actual measurements for valve sizes and throttle body sizes listed in the articles. :P

Yeah, yeah... I know. I just like giving you crap cause you had kind of been absent for awhile there.... Or at least not very active.

Yeah I sometimes get tied up in real life and too much side jobs to get on the internet at times.

I was posting this same info over on DC, for a kid who was asking about how they got 240HP out of the new 3.9L. Just figured I'd post the same stuff here too.

Sorry, They already sent ME one of those. :P Now I just gotta get the damn'd car back together again one of these decades...

I'll do what I can to take pics of the engine components Ben.

Wonder If I could do a screen shot of the GM Product training video for the LZ Engine's, I've got it here at home and can play it on my computer... Shows the LIM ports. They remind me of a 4G63 Intake port on the head. Big fat Rectangular. Kinda like the stock 3400 ports but then squared at the edges and a bit fatter

Is there any possibility that if the new rockers are a 1.7 ratio that they could be transfered to gen 3 3400 head? It would be nice if that were the case.

As stated they are LS1 style which means they're a M8 bolt. Up untill 2003 or 2004 GM used M10 Rocker bolts. Which means no. Not to mention the LS motors use a different locator piece than the notch like the 60v6.

The LX9 which is the 3500 based off of the 3400.
No VVT. Has 24X reluctor wheel

The LZ4 which is based of the 3900.
Has VVT. Has 58X reluctor wheel.. No EGR. U-flow coolant design. Piston cooling oil jets.

And the LZE is the LZ4 but is E85 fuel capable.

                        Those are the 2006 engines.

3500 has 9.8 CR as well

Some info I posted in the 3900 pics thread. You got it all I think anyway

Oh, and the exhaust manifolds from the Chevy Uplander are of the log style like the 3400. So they can be used if the header style ones cause fitment problems.

Happy LZ9 Owner here. Picked up a 2006 GTP 2 weeks ago and just love it. It has torque everywhere, it makes it just a plesure to drive even more so with it mated to the F40 6 Speed. To bad it came with Eagle LS2's

I thought the LZ4 Had a dual stage intake aswell, guess not.
