  • Building an intake question

I'm interested in building my own intake. I currently have a carb'd 2.8L in my Jeep Cherokee. I'd like to buy an entire 3.4L RWD shortblock with 2000+ heads. The problem being is that there is no manifold available to run a carb. Is there anywhere I could buy intake flanges for? Could I make a custom valley pan to keep the oil in? Any info on this would be greatly apreciated. I'm gathering info on this build as I go. Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

    RE: Building an intake question

I would imagine it would be easier to take the stock gen 3 lower intake and cut out the parts you don't need and then weld your own tubing to a carb plate. That would keep the flange and valley portion sealed and save you some expense at the same time. That is how I would go about it anyway.

Agreed. However getting equal fuel flow to each runner may be a task since they are all seperated far apart.

If I had heads I could make a flange no sweat. I could also bend you a valley pan aswell. But I need a block with heads on it.

Or if someone has a CAD drawing I can cut flanges in no time. But I doubt anyone has a drawing for it.

        How about multiple small carbs?

you can always buy a 6 ITB intake from Ryan falconer for $1500 for the aluminum heads

Wouldn't that involve converting to EFI though? Motorcycle carbs perhaps? Would probably give you more even fueling though isn't the stock carb setup a 390 CFM? Im pretty stupid when it comes to carbs:P

              Good luck with those flanges....

They'll need to be CNCed, from a 1 or 1.25" (I don't remember what I came up with) thick piece of material, and machined out to provide clearance for the rockers and pushrods, and still provide a sealing surface for the valve covers. Definatly not like building a SBC intake starting with flat flanges.

why not just convert to EFI??? it can be a bit of a task, but nothing near building an intake manifold. aside from the dificulty, there are the added benifits of an efi system.

Agreed. Every time my dune buggy chokes out off camber or under hard braking I want to get out and smash the god damn carb with a hammer...

As soon as I find an EFI donor it is in.
