  • Lightweight Starters?

RWD applications use an old tech heavy starter while the transverse engines use a smaller lighter and supposedly more powerful starter.

Unfortunately not interchangeable as they bolt on opposite sides of the block.

Anyone know of a RWD substitute starter in the FWD style?

okay maybe I'll just sound like a moron.. but won't an SBC lightweight race starter work for 60 degree v6s ... FWD or RWD if you buy the ones with the adjustanble solenoid offset?

That's exactly what I am wondering.

Maybe the same as the 90 deg. V6 as well?

u know the funny thing about this q? yesterday at work (autozone) some1 purchased a new starter for their 01 GAGT, and it was made wrong, it looked like it would mount on the other side of the block, perfect for RWD LOL.

I spent the time going through the catalogues and comparing starters.

There is a lightweight high torque starter used in some of the vans and even on the 454 trucks that should sub for the Camaro - half the weight and it will spin a big block - what's not to like?

Did you check the 3800 camaro's and see if the starter is on the correct side, like the 3.4 camaro one?

All the 660 RWD starters are big. My donor 3.4L came from a 95 which was the last year for RWD and it was identical to my S-10

Yes, but there are other later starters that are not big and that do fit the 3.4.

Right, but not off a RWD 60*V6

Yes, that's what I meant when I said 'other' starters.

They were used on 90 deg. V6 and V8 applications but fit V6-60

Indeed. One thing I do know is that the bolt holes on SBC starters are SAE and 660 ones are metric and slightly larger. So you will have to drill out the holes a tiny bit.
