after looking at the gears again, the crank sproket looks just fine. how can just the cam sproket go that bad and leave the crank sproked alone?

Looks like they forgot to harden that cam gear.

Woa... that does look pretty bad doesn't it? When I put my new cam in around 52K miles I put a new chain on and damper but not new gears. The gears looked in pretty good shape still, but the chain was stretched out a little more than the new one (but no where near as stretched as that one). That was with a stock cam and about 2+ years with LS1 valve springs. No idea how bad it's gonna get with the new cam and LS6 springs. I don't drive the car a lot but I guess I'll have to pull the cover and check them in a year or so. Just in case we never find a better chain/gear set anywhere, does anyone think a stock set might benefit or live longer if they were cryo treated?

i would imagine. the final gears for the after market Vette are cryo treated and i don't think they've had any problems. my dad's got a set of 3.90's in his 03 Z06 and they're awesome! it'd be neat if they did that with the chain.

Interesting pics I need to get pics of the teeth and put them out. They are not quite "that" bad, but there is some slight scoring on the tips.

My timing chain and gears looked just like Colins when I took them off. Sloppy as hell, and chewed up teeth. Only difference is mine was a Sealed Power set. Again, driving habits and abuse are likely to blame.
And I just picked up my Cloyes roller set last week.

I had the cloyes roller set in my 3.1 and it was sloppy after 50k (or maybe sooner, I changed it out at 50k). Im not sure on clearance, but any chance the 3.4 DOHC setup would fit? It uses a tensioner in there.

Franz!! Can you tell us how many miles you had on that set?

I figure 50K on anything moded for high power is pretty darn good. These lil 3.1L engines just don't have the parts like the LS6's. You can't expect them to last 100K.

Curtis's double roller is still in and he dosen't have or has had any problems. You know what kind of driving he does!

I don't usually put a lot of mines on mine, though. I'd guess 3000 miles is the most my car sees a year.

I can't see why it wouldn't fit. Do you have any pics?

I don't know if I have any pictures but I doubt it right now. I swear it looks like the same as the pushrod setup only instead of the guides, it has a tensioner assembly in there. If I can find my old chain and tensioner out in the shed tomorrow, ill take some pics and measurements.
