  • Cam in OBD 1.5

Any body know if a regrind will work with the obd 1.5? Like maybe Milzy stage 1? Cammotion has not got back to me, yet. Mantapart says their cam will, and adds 10 horse to a stock engine. This is my '95 GA, 3100sfi. I don't want to buy from mantapart because their service is really poor. The pontiac dealer mechanic said their MIGHT be a chance a smll step up in cams would be ok, but he has never seen anybody do it. He also suggested i try to find 1.7, or 1.8 rocker ratio instead, if I can find them for my heads. Thanks for the help.

Rockers are definitely an easier install, but after reading a bit on here, I thought the consensus was that while there were aftermarket rockers for the 60* engines, they were stock ratio, and that the 1.7 or 1.8's are a custom one off kind of thing. I think the computer would tolerate them better, though, too. I know, though, that in the end, a cam MAY actually be cheaper. I know the L36/L67 engines, it's actually cheaper, parts wise to do a cam, and keep the stock rockers. A 1.7 upgrade can be done later. If these 60* engines had the aftermarket valvetrain support of the 3.8's, they'd definitely go a long ways, what with aluminum heads, and blocks available.

One thing that you might want to consider doing, is either reverting back to a 1994 or earlier OBD-I setup, or even a 1996+ full OBD-II configuration. It'd be some work, but I should think that it would make future modifications a lot easier as well.

See, thats the thing. I keep asking if somebody wants to do a obd 2 conversion, but i have had only two responses,, one from Milzy, which went for 800.00 plus the cost of the dyno and tune. The other was on here for 500.00, but i have not heard back from them involveing some questions i had. I am still waiting on a few soucres to get back to me about the whole obd1 set-up useing the 3.4 dohc computer. I just want the most cost effective soultion to run improved air/fuel in/out. If obd 1.5 has got some room in it, then great. Would the 1.7 rockers be like going to a "step-up" in cam?

Everything you want to do I think I've already done... I had a pretty decent regrind in my 94 3100 while still running the stock OBD 1.5 PCM. As you mentioned in a PM, both korbendallas and myself are running 3400s off of our stock OBD 1.5 PCMs. Are they ideal? Most likely not. But I've been running my 3400 for almost 2 years now on it without any issues, and I ran the regrind for over 2 years with only a lopey idle and issues holding an idle until it got warm.

I don't know, and quite honestly, I really don't care. I'm pretty much out of modding the car right now. Putting the 3400 in there brought me basically back to a stock setup. It runs fine for me without any noticable problems and gets decent gas mileage, so I relly don't care how well its tuned.

Ive done the ODBII upgrade myslef, its not hard, just takes some time to prepare and a weekend to actually install the PCM and harness.

I havent had time to do a HowTo yet but Ill be happy to give you any tech info you need.

BTW Milzy calls me when he has problems with ODBII upgrades
