how do you disable EGR in the chip? i have a 3.4 l32

does that also make the computer switch to new fueling tables?

raeson i ask is that the egr serves to heat up your hair and make better gas millage under 'cruise' conditions... so if you just took it off the computer would be a little confused wouldnt it?

i need someone to explain this disabling to me... its probably a reprogrammed computer off the net right?

The egr cools the combustion process, and the computer uses a different fuel constant vs egr%. If you turn off the EGR, it uses the 0% constant. No fuel table mods required. I never noticed a difference in mpg either.

how about timing and the egr? any changes needed there? without those exhaust gases there wouldn't one need to retard it at all? or is it like the fueling with the 0% constant?

I have had no issues with ignition timing. I haven't really looked for the spark vs egr but it must do something cause it knows exactly what the EGR is doing. If you just remove the EGR and dont turn it off, you will throw a code but I think it would still go with the 0%. Either way, im only discussing it as if you turn the EGR off in the computer. You turn it off by setting the minimum coolant temp for it to turn on to 255 degrees celcius.

For the 96+ PCM's the maximum in the calibration is actually 284°F, based on the IAT. (Using PowrTuner, it is EGR_Air_Temp_Disable) Mine is set to this, and I have also disabled the DTCs for the EGR. Keep in mind that in some places, you would fail an emissions test since the EGR test will most likely come back incomplete.

As for the blockoff plate, I just used ¼" aluminum plate, which I cut out in the form of the gasket, drilled two holes, and bolted it down calling it a day (like mentioned above).

ok, now i just gotta find a powertuner then... sigh.

we just have a sniffer test around here, no mechanical inspection

Hmm, am I the only one that sees the benifit of keeping the EGR?
Am I the only one that noticed a gain in fuel economy, and cooler running temps, when I added the EGR to my truck?

I dunno about you, but on a street driven vehicle, I'll keep the EGR, thanks.

You will probabally fail NOx if you dont have EGR.

Was gonna say the same thing. EGR is needed for emmissions.

RIP OFF. Thats like $.50 in aluminum. Maybe 45 mins of fabrication time. Polished? Who cares is on the back of the intake you never see it.

Hell if you want something better send me your manifolds and I will cut off and weld up weld the entire EGR passage so it never looked like it was there.

Not really I don't have time.

well, since this has been brought back fron the dead

i took my car through emmissions testing today. just a quick review of some of what i have done to the motor

                          -comp 260h2
                          -1.6:1 rockers
                          -ported heads
                          -9.5:1 compression (from 8.5)
                          -custom headers, dual exaust
                          -no egr
                          -16lb injectors
                          -adjustable fpr
                          -255lph fuel pump
-no ecm tuning (although it needs it)

i thought the no egr was gonna kill me. i went through cleaner than it did stock. everything was under the average passing reading (idle and driving test at 40km/h), with the acception of nox. it was at 633, max allowable being 2600, and average being 550. so im still well within the limit. i however have a pair of 3 way high flow mini cats on it. if you want to ditch your egr and pass, get a 3 way cat.

Yup 3 ways do reduce NOx. Quite possibly the only reason you passed. Your car did not have a 3 way stock.

There are other tricks though. A higher octane gas or ethanol blended gas will reduce NOx. So will an electric fan if you keep it on during the test so that the engine coolant temp stays right on the boundry of the thermostat closing. The cooler you keep the engine and heads the better chance you have.

nope, didnt have a 3 way cat stock, but it also didnt have 2 of them and dual esaust, or headers.

No, not the only one. For most people and most street driven vehicles it is an advantage for all the things you mentioned. Thats why the OEM's started putting them on every car and truck they make.

Those of us who removed ours had our reasons for doing so though. I won't re-state them since they're all in the posts above.
