  • Wanting info on mods for 1988 2.8

I have a 1990 beretta GX with a 88 gt 2.8 engine. 67,000 miles and am looking hard to find some performance mods, info on porting plenum and intake...maybe custom cold air. would it be at least more than likely i could get good results out of placing a turbocharger in it or is it going to ruin my engine? what could i do to max the performance out on this engine staying under 3 grand in mods?

There is a turbo kit for sale on the W-body forum right now .on E-bay actually, for $500. not sure if the link is somewhere here?

Looks like it is a T-25 turbo like a garrett but made in France.

go over to TGP forums when you get it, will get you what you need to know.

I can probly get the actual link if you want.

Do a 3400 swap you will be far happier and will also be running in the 14's or very low 15 depending if it is auto or stick.

You get all the modern perks of the new engine.

ya, id go with the 3400, get a regrind on the cam
you will have alot more piston/valve clearance than a 2.8 block
been there (doing it) lol wish i had a 3.1 block i did up, i had to get my pistons machined for the clearance on the valves, and im running a 469 lift
port the 3400 heads they have the larger 1.76'' diameter intake valve
and gasket match the 3400 head/lower/upper intake manifolds
the 3400 will yeild more compression than the 2.8/3x00 combo

get the turbo and replace the computer and run the tgp code
        5 spd getrag 282 / 284

and the rest is up to your imagination i guess

          stock 3400 in '90 beretta

if i can just swap to a 3400 and get better results than a 2.8 or 3.1 stock than im happy with that if its easier than to upgrade the 2.8 i have in it now. will the 3400 mount to my current tranny which is stock off the original 3.1? what am i going to need to just drop the 3400 in and run it like it is, new mounts etc? can i use the same cpu? what electricals am i going to have to change? should i brace the front end more since it will be a bigger engine?

this guide should shoot you in the right direction

i would also suggest some tuning to your computer

unless you grab the computer from the donor car
but then youll have to re wire a little and not sure if your cluster panel is compatable, some cars have the sensors feed direct to the gagues, some are through the computer
its alot more work changing computers, much easier to jsut tune what you have in there right now

you can visit www.gmpcm.com for the program.. i use gmpcm and like it alot, all there deffinition files are complet emappings
you just have to figure out what computer you have in your car and then figure out the deffinition file to use with gmpcm
gmpcm is a good place to ask tuning related questions(mick is a genious) lol
you will also want to be able to "log data" this is what you do to see what areas you need to adjust in your computer

you can get cables from mastach mastach.com

visit http://www.moates.net/, they have the willems eprom burner, chips, adaptors and all sorts of funky stuff to check out

              trans question

ok i got that. will my original 3.1 trans bolt right up to the 3400 without mods? and if so is there a way i can gear it lower than it is by modding the orginal trans or should i get another one that will go on the 3400 that already is geared lower?

                RE: trans question

                Yes, it will bolt up.

Yes, you can change the gearing. Look either in the tranny section of the site or of the forums for discussions and how-to's on this.

A 3.1L with stock heads and intake will not touch a 3400. Even with a new cam. Moly rigs wont do shit for power. They require a apecial cylinder wall finish which is costly aswell. You can only do a cleanup bore on a 3.1L.
