  • hot intake UIM

When my car is running for a while i notice that my UIM gets rather hot has anybody ventured into some type of cooling system to cool the UIM

  • #2
It is the same temp as the rest of the motor. Nothing you can do to cool it

Well, you can get a cold air intake, which will keep it cool. We witnessed this at the first 60v6 meet. Franz had the only cool plenum of us all due to his cold air intake setup.

        Phenolic spacers will help.

My car can idle for 1//2 an hour, and the plenum is still ambient temp.

A spacer between the lower and upper?

ive seen a guy route his a/c through his throttle body heater, made the car 3 tenths quicker

Id have to see dyno proof of that working. I don't see cooling the TB as having much impact on the intake charge.

i can see it working, as not just your tb is getting cooled, but iot will cool the whole intake down. ive ridden in the car with it on and off, deffinitly a good sized difference

WTF what a bunch of bullshit.

AC compressor takes like 10 HP. You will gain 1% in power for a 10*F difference in temperature. So you would need like a 100*F difference in order to make the HP to drop 3/10 and overcome the drag of the AC. This is a very concervitave number. Furthermore the AC compressor will never drop the intake temperature that much.

                        Mental horsepower.

Ricers use it all the time.

Well.... what if it was sitting there running with the A/C on, cooling the TB? I dont know exactly how cold it could possibly make the TB, but if it cooled it enouh, you could turn the compressor off right before the run. Not only that, but isnt the clutch supposed to disengage the compressor when you go to WOT?

Though, I feel that the car was probably capable of the 3/10ths faster, just got a better run that time. The idea of it just doesnt seem practical to me.

Not preaching this, but there are some folks whom swear by thermal barrier coatings to the UIM and LIM....

that is what he did, run the ac in the staging lanes, and shut it off just as he stages. after the run the intake was still nice and cool. you can still call bs, ive seen the slips though. the car ran 16.0s without it, consistantly, and ran 15.7 after cooling the intake.

its the same idea as icing an intercooler, or an intercooler shot.
