And this thread comes back It did make me think of two things tho that is common in the GP community:
1) Happy Knob
2) ICCU
Both fool the IAT, but the ICCU goes even further and makes adjustments to the MAF signal too. Personally, I am not a fan of either, but, it can be helpfull for MINOR tweaking in the event you want to adjust the timing a Little.
I'm assuming that these work decently with a boosted motor? I see they seem to be a GTP thing.
being leaner is better for power (and unfortunetly heat) production....
The whole "lean is mean" phrase is BS. Lean gets pretty mean with boost/nitrous when the motor blows. I'm sure it's not so great with N/A either. I do see that it's good when cruising for MPG though.

The way they work is through the use of a modified Air Temp Spark table (well, this simple for the happy knob). The knob "fools" the PCM and reports higher or lower air temps to adjust the spark advance. As for all the rest the ICCU does, I have not heavily researched. There are some Grand Am guys using the ICCU's. (ZZP ICCU & PCM combo)

umm if your some idiot whos TUNING OUT YOUR ASS! then yes... your eventually gonna f*** sumthin up
i only recomend leaning the engine out on a dyno along with timing changes to see maximum power, you go off and turn your pressure down or f*** with the fuel map without knowing what the hell your doing your gonna screw sumthin up

remember, tuning is best left on the dyno
And if one is asking about an IAT sensor mod (or the ebay chip thingy) then i'm assuming it's because they're tyring to add power and be a cheapass about it. Which leaves the likely possibility that they're not going to spens money on the dyno (God knows they're not exactly.... free)
EGT works well too. 12:1 AFR turns out to be right around 1575 degrees F. And like you said about lean = heat production. Sure you can tweak it a bit. But if you start to do something like 1700-1800 degrees, you're basically screwed. Personal opinion, i'd rather be too rich than be too lean.
I have an ICCU for my car. I didn't get it with the pcm though so the timing feature doesn't work. I orginally used it just to add fuel with the MAF signal. Now I have a powertuner so I don't use it much anymore. I never liked how the timing function works anyway. You have to unplug the IAT sensor and plug the ICCU into the harness. That means that the pcm isn't receiving an air temp signal from the sensor anymore, and isn't adjusting timing up and down according to the outside air temp. It's just getting a constant value of whatever you set the ICCU at. The pcm cross references air temp for a lot of other functions and I'd rather have it getting a true air temp reading.
The only thing I would want the ICCU timing function for is it has a voltage input to switch it to a second timing map for use with nitrous, methanol injection, etc. When you active the nitrous system (or whatever) if you hook up the solenoid power to the input on the ICCU it switches maps. I just wish the timing worked like the MAF where it reads the stock sensor and just adds or subtracts a choosen value from the signal.
I have a wideband O2 sensor permanently mounted in my car, so I could make fuel and timing adjustments at the track to adjust for race gas or weather conditions, and maximize HP without blowing up the engine. I may have to try some other type of nitrous timing control instead. Maybe from MSD.

Personal opinion, i'd rather be too rich than be too lean.
same here....... to lean and you run into serious problems, to rich and your just waste'n gas, yes there are ill affects to being to rich but its far less worse than being too lean
It is almost just easier and less fustrating to just reprogram the Mem-Cal and or upgrade the PIC in the ecm.
That's old school talk to us with flash PCMs
As for a solution, my only option right now is really mechanical unless I can convince a certain someone (not on this forum) to do a calibration for a 2-bar MAP. It is a tad more complex since the MAP tables are in the binary portion of the calibration.
