  • Regrind cam specs...need some help.

    Good day all,

I have a spare 3400 roller cam, just sitting in my shop, and I'd like to get it reground. It's ready to go.

    here's a mod list :

    2002 3400
    stock valvetrain
    3500 plenum 70mm TB
    Rotrex C30-94 Centrifugal Supercharger runing about 13 - 14 PSI max @ 6K.
    Intercooled
    2.5 exhaust
    30# injectors
TGP computer chip + 2 BAR map sensor, and a bit of tunning.

SHOULD have headers in the future, and lightly ported heads, just like the how-to on this site.

    Questions :

    1. My spare cam is from a 1999 3400, after being re-ground, will it bolt into my 2002 engine? (I am running MPFI, and don't need a cam sensor)

    2. What specs would anyone recommend? I race the car quite often, and wouldn't mind losing some driveability. I also don't want it to rev very high, shifting at 6500 would be the MAX.

    3. What supporting mods would need to be done with a regrind? new pushrods? Valve springs?

    4. Who would you recommend do the work for me? I have searched and it seems Crower has a good turnaround time and good service.

    Thanks!

Shifting around 6500 get a cam with about a 260 to 270 duration intake and about 270 to 280 exhaust. Go with a descent LSA since you are using boost say 112 to 114. Lift in the .5 area on both valves.

If its a regrind, you are kind of stuck with the stock LSA, although I have heard they can offset grind it for a slight change in LSA.

          LSA is 112 stock yes.

Would a new set of PR's be required if I went with say :

          Dur : 216 intake / 216 exhaust, @ 0.050" lift
          Lift @lobe : 0.290"
          Lift with 1.6 stock 3400 rockers : 0.464"
          LSA : 112º

Should get me a bit more power on top, with minimal loss at low RPM... Just the pushrods that bother me now, what to do with that...?

You could probably get by with stock, but you'd be limiting the gains of the cam. Determining new pushrod size really isn't that hard... And its definately worth the effort.

              Thanks Brad!

Also, who would you recommend I send my cam out to?

Can't I get a regrind that wil alow me to use stock pushrods? I thought regrinds added material to the lobe, then ground it off again, thus leaving the base circle the same....?

Nope, regrinds (at least with these cams) take material off, thus decreasing the size of the base circle.

I had mine done by Crower several years ago, but I think either Crane or Comp has probably done more since then.

Well after really looking into this, I will either stay with the stock cam or get a billet one from cammotion. Maybe a stage 1 from Milzy.

I don't want to spend 150 PLUS 200 on custom pushrods and a regrind, when I can have a billet cam to my specs for a bit more cash.

I had a company called camcraft regrind mine for my 3100and the only problem is you are limited to the added lift. the duration stays almost the same but the base circle should remain the same. After they run it down they weld new material over it. Caution has to be used because if you cut too deep you remove the heat treat section of the cam and that makes it soft causing a decresed service life. He was able to get mine to 272 lift with 215 duration. at the cam. that works out to 439 at the valve with 1.6 ratio rockers. I would like more but haven't found someone to do one in roller, and adding too much duration will drop the low end numbers down considerably.
