  • Anyone running a solid cam?

Building another iron head 3.1 - thinking of going with a Crower 03065 cam.

    260/266 SAE, 212/216 @ .050, .420/.423" lift. I'll be running 1.6 roller rockers with it.

3.1L, ported heads, custom intake/runners, LS1 75mm throttle body, and looking for 7200rpm.

RE: Anyone running a solid cam?

I'm running a solid roller cam, though. That's a mild cam compared too mine. Mine is 254/246 @ .050" .62/.60" lift.

Crower lists the powerband as 2200-6000rpm, redline 7000rpm.

TurboZ24, how is your camshaft, driving around daily?

What kind of mileage do you get, running around town? It idles fine?

You had to have done some serious tuning to it...

If you're running around daily with a cam like that, I might step up to the Crower level 4 -

282/287 SAE, 236/242 @ .050", .449/.458 (.479/489 with my 1.6 rockers)... my only real problem, is that it's on a 110LSA. That's just a tad tight, for my ECM tastes...

Well, the mileage is fine so long as I stay off the throttle. Highway cruising is around 27-29 mpg, but if I push the motor, it get's around 10 mpg, but that's probably more too do with the turbo and power level than anything else.

It still needs some additional tuning, but it idles fine at 1000 rpm, but that idle speed is also partly due too the injector sizing (it's not easy too get an MPFI car too idle clean with 55 lb injectors).

That's cool... So your cam is a custom? Where do you shift at? Any dyno graphs?

The cam is custom, yes. At the track, we usually shift between 7400 and 7600 rpm, redline is at 8000, but don't go that high for shifts.

As for Dyno, I will get it done here shortly, mainly for the final tune. I've got too decide if I'm going too post it or not. Even if I decide not too post, if someone asks, I'll tell. We will also be finishing the tune on the turbo wagon, since it is getting upgrades this weekend (fuel pump, aftermarket ECM, that good junk).

Ok, wow - you're shifting higher than I want to. LOL. I'm looking for shifting around 7000-7200 rpm. Seems to me something in the 236º @ .050, with .500" lift would do me well, on a 112 LSA

Yeah, for some odd reason, I wanted it too rev really high, which the motor likes (the heads flow 229 intake and 200 exhaust @.05, so they are worked over a lot) and the cam let's me do it, but the tranny does not like it at all.

A whole lot of port work and the guy who did it for me has done 60 degree heads before for some sprint applications.

Sweet... I'll call around tomorrow, see what I can find out about the solid cams from the manufacturers. Is there any reason you went with solid rollers, instead of solid flat tappets?
