  • Upgrading 3.4 RWD intake manifold to newer FWD

Can the newer FWD lower intake manifold be put on a 3.4 RWD iron head engine? Looks like they flow better and one just sold on ebay for $15
Is it a matter of modifying or no way?
    Thanks

The ports of the FWD intake will not match up to the ports of the iron heads. The only way to make the swap work would be to switch to aluminum heads. But to do that, you also have to swap the pistons.

by swap pistons do you mean just using the pistons from the 3x00 motor..and if so what would the estimated CR be?

OK, B, so since I'm comtemplating sticking the newer aluminum heads on my 3.4 for my FWD application, I'll have to also use the FWD intake then I'm assuming. Crap. I was hoping to use that nifty looking wishbone intake.

Does the aluminum intake, say, the one off the 3.1 that was in the car, flow better than the Camaro one? I know it won't flow as well as the 3x00 stuff that everyone's always yammering about, but I've already got 2 spare 3.1 engines (complete) sitting around here - might as well pirate parts from them (ARRGG!!) before going out and paying for other parts!

Nope cannot use a RWD iron head intake. It will never match to the ports.

FWD GenII stuff is not that bad. The ports are about the same size as the iron head stuff.

um...i have some info for you...

yea but...the gen III stuff is sooo much better. and it fit my 1994 3.4L Camaro... check da pics! :-D

              happy lookin.

those pics show the 1994 3.4L block, honed, cleaned, rebuilt, using 1996 Gen III Aluminum heads with stamped steel 1.5 rocker arms and the 1996 3100 intake. i also used the upper intake of the 1996 3100. (the 3400 is coming - be patient.)

i used the 1996 3100 fuel rail + injectors, a 2000+ 3400 tb, rksport headers (cause i couldnt get the stock exhaust manifolds to bolt up properly, trust me i tried EVERYTHING..) -- pistons are stock GM dish made for a 2000+ grand am GT 3400. compression sits around 9.5:1 - stock. the heads are in stock condition along with the upper and lower intakes and throttle body.

              dyno'd rwhp with cutout open, no cat, 2.5" y-pipe -> 3" I: 170.6 @ 4820 rpm
              dyno'd rwtq with same setup: 207.3 @ 3485 rpm

feel free to look me up on IM if you have any q's.

i have the dyno sheets here: http://camaro.adwire.com/dyno4.html

edit: o yea, p.s. and all that crap, but my 3.4 stock with the wierd ass intake made 142.6 hp and 185 tq before i did the aluminum head swap and rksport header install. just fyi.

Betterthanyou; the genII intake prts are closer to the early 3100 ports than the iron head ports, in both shape and location, just the genII intake ports are a little taller.

The only bolt on way to use the genIII intake is to do a complete top end swap.

heheh...he knows about as much bout my car as i do

studlycamaro there is tryin to do the same thing. hes right. i used the entire 3100 topend.

note for all RWD fbody owners (4th gen) -- you WILL have to grind off the ridges/numbers on teh top of the intake manifold, or...get one from a chevy venture (they are already smooth) cause otherwise it wont fit. when its all said and done, you will end up with a 1/8th clearance between the motor and the engine bay (yes its that tall) -- btw. did i mention NONE of this is smog legal in CA?

                        <sighs> stupid smog nazis.

First off, welcome to the site! Secondly, to clarify, you are just wanting to put aluminum heads and top-end onto your 3.4L Camaro block?
