  • 3100 to 3400 question

well i lost a auction for a 3400 but a friend said he can get me a 3100 with a blown headgasket for cheap what would i need to make a 3100 into a 3400 ?

is it like the difference between a 2.8 and 3.1 the crank and rods?

    3400-3100

I have the 3400 at a bore of 3.62in, with a stoke of 3.30in. I'm not 100% on these, thats just what i have in a spec manual for the '05 grand am engine. I was also thinking that the 3100 is a 3.50-3.51 bore and a 3.30-3.31 stroke. they are basicly the same dimension wise, the 3400 is the "stroker" version. I have seen the 3100 with the high flow heads make 170hp, 185lb ft. of torque, the same set-up on the 3400 yeilds 175hp, 205lb ft. of torque. More stroke=more torque.
Don\'t hate me because I\'m horny.

      RE: 3400-3100

3400 and 3100 share the same stroke. 3400 has a different block (more metal) allowing for the larger bore size. Although it is possible to bore a 3100 to a 3400, it isn't recommended at all. I can't remember right off the difference, but I think you'd have to overbore the 3100 0.120" to get up to a 3400. You wouldn't want to really push that powerwise without sonic tests and such of the block.

If nothing else, you can do the 3100/3400 intake swap. I've got that on my car right now. It's fairly time-consuming, but it was worth it to me.

Well, if you need help, or don't mind it, I'd love to help, since we're like a 15 minute drive.

Best answer here is, YES. Between different years there are differences. But in some years they are the same.
