  • port theory question

red line is where abouts i would port but would it negativly affect flow and performance taking that much away from the valve guide.. besides taking away from strength that guide is rather short lol

the blue is kinda more realistic

    what do you guys think

edit: grr its not uploading... and i gotta go posted at last minute fix later

Colin what do you charge to port Iron heads? I need a set done!

Sorry for the off topic but I cant see any pics. Removing the protruding valve guide is common practice in the porting world.

No pic..but you can touch the roof, the bow, behind the valve guide, around the guide, and streach the port floor wider..but don't touch the middle of the floor or where it curves down on the short side. In the intake same..but you can also make the short side have a lump to improve flow.

                  Nice work Arn!
Nice to still be able to see what you're doing even though I'm not always able to see it in person anymore.
                  Good job!

Have fun Ive done 4 sets of heads in the past its a long tedious job. Doing Iron heads sucks lol.

This one might give you an idea of the extreme end of porting a iron head

Some pics of 3400 heads I did for Eric a year and a half ago.

Sil the heads I just finished up last week for FarmerZ24 are already given back to him. Since my machinist is closer to him than I am I left them with him for Chris to pick up. I didn't get any pics of them. Which sucks as its some of my best port work on a 60v6 head yet. I've been porting 60v6 heads(as well as other engines) for 5 years and each head you do you learn or improve technique/ports on it more and more.

that polish job on the cumbustion chamber looks good, same with your port work,im pretty much screwed right now with regards to working on my car... low funds, no where to bring it to work on becuase i have it stored at my moms and shes moving to the states in like a week lol
so i guess no porting for me

i have a set of ported gen2 heads, w/ valve job and i noticed the performance big time when i slapped em on last year
going to the hybrid swap now i have no use for them hehe
maybe i'll hog em out and fine tune my porting skills for next summer and do my 3100 heads then

thanks for the info everyone, indeed helpfull

v6ho.. what are your preffered tools, grits, and polishers, and what grit did you run over the intakes with? looks really rough 100 grit ?
im not sure what grit i want to do my intakes with i was thinking 120, and for my exhaust... well polish em up real good

I have a selection of 6inch long shank and normal shank Carbide Burrs for aluminum and Ferrous metals that I use to cut and shape the ports.

I then use 40 and 80 Grit sanding rolls as well as on the exh side 120 grit flap wheels and then two series of polishing buff's.

do you use the medium and fine cross buffs? Pretty much the same tools I use, though no flap wheels.
