  • Steel intakes???

I'm making a steel intake for my 3.4. I was just wondering if there was any downsides to this.. i made a picture of what i plan on doing.
The intake thats bolts on the the lower manifold will be 2" high 6" wide 10" long and will be just a big opening inside of it. The supercharger will be shifted farther toward the front of the plenum. That shouldnt cause any gas flow problems should it??? Thanks for any help its greatly appreciated

How do you get these pictures to work?

    RE: Steel intakes???

    You mean steel, like this?

As far as getting pictures to work, it depends on how you are trying to do it... If using the IMG tags, you need to have the pic hosted somewhere on the net. If using the attach function, just browse for the pic on your computer, then hit the ADD ATTACHMENT button.

If you have some fab skills, what you propose should work fine. Just two notes:

-It'll be really tall. You OK with that? If you feel up to it, you may wish to consider coming in the back of the M-90. You'd have to figure out a way to weld in injector bosses, and you'd need to use something like megasquirt, but the entire thing would be a lot shorter.

-Doesn't the M-90 have an internal pressure release? I'm pretty sure that the later ones, at least did.

injector bosses and a fuel injection computer arent an issue if he is going to be using a carb

but that particualr carb setup is rather tall. maybe having an adapter cut out by a shop would be better. 1" thick aluminum, with the ports cut out, and hog the rest out under where the blower will sit.

I dont mind it being tall at all. I couldnt figure out another way to do the carb. I figured the box for the top would be good enough. Ive got a friend who works for the city who is going to weld it up for me. Im gonna order a cowl hood for my truck(one that actualy works). Yall don't think i will have any gas flow problems though? like one cylinder going lean or anything of the such? I have a 170Degree thermostat, and im gonna run colder plugs and retard the timing alot till i take it to a dyno to get it tuned. I am only gonna run around 6-7psi, im sure the M90 will flow more then enough air for this engine. Later on i want to rebuild the whole engine with lower compression & run around 12PSI. I figure that the old super coupes ran up to 13psi so with this smaller engine i shouldnt have any problems with 12psi. Should i get a bigger carb than what i have? i have a Holley 390cfm, should i richen the carb up all the way for the supercharger? Thanks again

Here i dont think yall understood the picture correctly. the carb is going to go into the back of the supercharger.

Just remember that wet flow from a carb (air + fuel) needs to keep velocity up, otherwise the fuel will drop out of suspension. This will cause huge mixture distribution problems. Having the air go down through the carb, then turn 90 degrees towards the rear of the engine, the turn down/forward 180 degrees into the back of the blower looks like a recipe for disaster. You would be better off mounting the carb rearward of the blower, so it only makes one 90 degree turn, then flows directly into the blower inlet. Making something like this clear the distributor might be tricky. There was a Fiero guy whom did this with a 3.8 Buick engine. I will try to dog up a picture of it.
