  • pushrod guide clearance

how much is enough btw the pushrod and the inner "U" of the pushrod guide, i installed my #1 cylinder pushrods and rockers to check for clearance, looks like i have about 1/8" clearance btw the pushrod and guide when its at the closest point

i am using pre 99 3400 heads shaved .010", .040" , 3.1 pushrods, crane gold race series roller rockers 1.6:1 ratio, a reground cam but i dont know how much he took off the base circle.

any input would be great.. thanks guys

    RE: pushrod guide clearance

1/8" is plenty. You just don't want them touching throughout the entire range of motion. I would think ~0.050" would be more than enough. You should really check every one of your pushrods for clearance. When I ground my guideplates for clearance, I noticed there was a lot of variability to the guideplates, and some pushrods were much closer than others.

yup i checked each one 2 times. first time before i loc-tited the studs and then of course the second time putting them in for good

i do have huge clearance issues on the LIM though, lol i'll see how much i have to take off 'er

Be careful when you start working on the manifold. I know of 2 people off the top of my head that have ground right into the runner, therefore ruining the manifold.

You have to constantly check your progress. Dont forget to do your checking with the valvetrain adjusted to proper preload and the gaskets installed. Remove material and stay parallel to the runners. You should have a good 1/8" material left when finished. Lloyd and I had no problem at all and we only did it once.

i did check quite often, its weird having metal on both sides of my hand but its so thin i can press on it and it flexs, well maybe cast metal
i had a little bit less left then you guys had, i'm sure probably about a 1/16" in some places, however i have a means of taking care of that

so far so good! the only additional place i had to take material off was on the side of 2 runners for 2 other rockers to clear

i can't imagine trying to do this without a gasket O.o there would be no physical way to get them in (and yes my valves are adjusted, each cylinder individually.)
