what do you guys with j-bodies use for mounts??? in a year and a half i have killed 2 front mounts, 3 rear mounts, a dogbone and a tranny mount. this is with a stock 2.8l. right now im in the middle of putting my new motor in and and still figuring out what to do with mounts. i know a guy that can pour polyurethane, however he has had my mounts for over a month and hasnt touched them yet, and i just cant wait for them anymore. i tried the window urethane trick, that worked in the front mount, however put more strain on the rear mount so id break more of those. i also cant justify the $800 for a set of mounts from j body perfomance.

so what have you guys done???

    I welded all mine solid.

I was having issues with "fake knock" and consequent 15* of igniting retard from my 2.5" downpipe hitting the swaybar. Made the car run like crap.

So I got them all solid, and so far, there are no ill effects, excet for ONE tiny little thing : Do not try to look into your side mirrors and focus on something, lol, they just "buzz" to much, and you can't see the reflection clearly. Wheel hop is also gone with the solid mounts.

I have heard this can be harmful to the engines, but, I just couldn't figure out a better way to fix the problem so I busted out the MIG.

      RE: j-body mounts

What kind of mounts are you using when you replace them? Genuine GM, or aftermarket (Autozone, etc.)? When my X-11 was stock, I was tearing up motor mounts about every 6 months. I would replace the motor mount, then a tranny mount would go, then the dogbone, etc. If you don't replace them all at once, a weak mount will cause more engine movement, which will quickly kill the other mounts. After I went through 3 complete sets of Autozone mounts (lifetime warranty) over the course of 2 years, I broke down and bought three lower mounts from GM, and made a poly dogbone mount with the inserts from the Fiero Store. With the GM mounts, I went over 2 years without failing a mount, and this was with a healthy 3.4L. I pulled the mounts out after 2 years to install solid mounts, and at the time they still looked good.

        RE: j-body mounts

i am running anchor mounts. i install these at work all the time with absolutly no problems in any vehicles. i know a lot of people who have the same problem as i do, but dont seem to break them as often as i do. when i first replaced mounts, i did all 3 + dogbone, amd about 2 months later broke the fron mount. i go a new front mount, as well as pulled the rear mount and filled both with window urethane. the front mount is still in ok shape, but the rear mounts keep pushing the urethane out.

i put about 1500km on my car a month, so solid mounts are out of the question. i also have heard of people breaking crankshafts and cracking blocks in j-bodies with solid mounts due to harmonics and distortion. i was thinking of "chaining" the motor in the front (old school method to keep from ripping mounts) however with the filled front mount, im killing rear mounts, and the only way to prevent that by chaining is to tie to the strut tower bar, and thats not gonna happen without bending it.

          RE: j-body mounts

The Anchor mounts from Autozone were the ones I was tearing up, whereas the GM ones held up just fine.

Which dealer do you go to? I just ordered up a couple of sets for a couple of people, warehouses are well stocked. Yeah when I did my 5spd swap I installed a brand new set from work but after dropping in the 3400 last week I know they won't be lasting until the end of the year

i hate autozone stuff, most of it has a "lifetime warranty" because you need it. Like the alternator i replaced 3 times, those 4 starters, the icm I can't remember how many times, a few coils... Just get some mounts from a KOI or NAPA (don't do Advance either) if you can't get real gm stuff, its just as good.

my local gm dealership told me that. they can be idiots some times.

im giving this guy a little longer to get my mounts filled, he is going to try to have them done in a couple days.

What kind fo engine are you putting in??

here ya go. a bunch of different designs. LOL

all look like they work fine. these are all for the 3X00 though.

put some poly in your stock mounts if your putting in the same engine. that seems to help with movement which i would think helps it last longer too.

no im putting in a built 2.8l. im wondering about mounts themselves, not mount brackets.

my biggest issue isnt the motor moving, its tearing the mounts apart.

but colin you dont drive the car anymore for a dd,, your talon is for that no? we dont have the cash to get other cars for dd's and have a track/friday night car .

i still think our best bet is getting them poured full with poly, i gave the guy mine longer ago then you did :P so i'm in line first. though i took out all the rubber on mine and am going to mock them up to get the right measurements, just gonig to be solid poly like jbp's

I filled mine up with 3M Window Weld and let them sit in the sun for 2 days to harden. So far its worked out great. Engine is in there tight, Can't rock it moving the car back/forth in gear.
